@ButlerWSoccer Defeats Milwaukee 1-0

Box Score

INDIANAPOLIS – A successful penalty kick mixed with a fantastic defensive effort allowed Butler to improve to 2-0-1 on Sunday afternoon as they defeated the visiting Milwaukee Panthers by the final score of 1-0.

Sophia Maccagnone beat the Milwaukee keeper to the bottom left side to get Butler on the scoreboard in the 15th minute of the game and that would end up being the game-winner as the stifling BU defense didn't allow a single shot from the Panthers.

"Team defense is something we have been working really hard on in training," Co-Head Coach Rob Alman said after the match. "It's been pretty good in most of the games so far."

Butler took seven shots in the opening half followed by eight in the final 45 minutes. They had two great looks to add a goal late in the contest but neither shot found the back of the net.

Milwaukee's goalkeeper was under pressure for a majority of the day as she ended the match with seven saves. Madison Card however didn't need to make a save in order to help BU post their second-straight shutout win.

"We knew that Milwaukee was a good team in possession," Alman added. "They are a team that likes a rhythm, therefore we were happy to concede possession as long as they couldn't penetrate and get behind us, or get around the sides. Our girls did a fantastic job and I'm really happy with their effort."

Today's goal was the first of the season for Maccagnone, moving her career total to 27, a total that ranks her fifth all-time in the record book. While Maccagnone came up with the game winner it is important to note that Serina Kashimoto, Christy Chou and Halle Stelbasky all contributed to the outcome.

Kashimoto took the ball through the middle of the Milwaukee defense and found Chou on the near, right side of the field. Chou sent the ball into the box where Stelbasky collected and shot from straight-away. The Panther defender got her hand on the ball which was called for the PK opportunity.

Stelbasky and Kashimoto combined for seven of Butler's 15 shots on the day. Jenna Dorchock and Breann Pempek were each in the box score with two while one shot a piece was recorded by Maccagnone, Shannon McDevitt, Paige Monaghan and Brenna Pawelkowski.
