Box Score INDIANAPOLIS – Butler scored two first half goals in the first six minutes of action to defeat IUPUI by the final score of 2-0 on Tuesday afternoon. The first score came from Jenna Dorchock at the 2:21 mark while goal two found the back of the net just over six minutes in courtesy of Sophia Maccagnone.
Maccagnone took her first of eight total shots just 25 seconds into the match, an attempt that was saved by goalkeeper Catherine Schmidt. Momentum stayed with BU as the 'Dawgs lined up for their first corner kick of the game just 50 seconds into the action.
The first attempt went to Maccagnone who once again fired at Schmidt, but a second save from the IUPUI keeper kept the game scoreless.
Maria Collica's second corner kick would give Butler the 1-0 lead as she found Jenna Dorchock for a header goal. Collica's kick came in from the right side of the field and connected with Dorchock from about 10 yards out. The score was significant for each student-athlete, going down as the first goal of the year for Dorchock and the first assist of the season for Collica.
Butler stayed aggressive as Maccagnone once again sliced through the Jag defense to get a great look, but the ball hit the post four and a half minutes into the game. Maccagnone would not be denied however as she came up with her second goal of the season off an assist from Paige Monaghan (6:01).
The game nearly moved to 3-0 in the 19th minute, but Maccagnone's shot bounced off the crossbar to keep IUPUI within striking distance. Although Butler was unable to increase their lead, the final outcome was never in question as the BU defense was lights out for a second-straight match.
Butler didn't allow a single shot on Sunday afternoon when they picked up the win at home against Milwaukee. That same team defense showed up again tonight with Butler winning the shot category 24-1. IUPUI ended the contest with 12 saves compared to just one for the Bulldogs.
With the victory, Butler improves to 3-0-1 on the year with all three wins coming as shutouts.
Madison Card once again started in goal for BU, ending the game with one save in 90 minutes of action. The Jags used two goalies on Tuesday with each student-athlete logging 45 minutes. Catherine Schmidt allowed each goal, but came up with a game-high seven saves. She was replaced by Nicole Kulovitz in the second half. The sophomore made four stops.
