Box Score INDIANAPOLIS – The Bulldogs ended the 2015 All-American Classic with a 1-2 overall record to take third place in the tournament format. Freshman Anna Logan was named to the all-tournament team after the final match who featured tournament-winner Cincinnati defeating Butler 3-1 (16-25, 25-23, 14-25, 15-25).
Logan just missed a double-double vs. the Bearcats by posting 16 digs and nine kills. Kodi Smith led the team with 18 digs and Tyler Taylor came up with a match-high five blocks.
The loss moves Butler to 2-7 overall while the Bearcats improve to 7-2. With the win, Cincinnati won the tiebreaker for first place and moved Northern Iowa to second. Butler finished third and UIC came in at fourth.
The Bearcats scrambled out to a 6-2 lead in the first set by making some great diving digs that kept the ball alive for the offense to produce points. Butler kept the score close by matching the intensity, but the score would favor Cincinnati at the halfway point 13-7. Butler used their first timeout of the game moments later when the Bearcats holding a 15-8 advantage. The strategy worked as Whitney Beck sent a kill to the court to cut into the lead. Beck led Butler with four kills in the opener, but the set would belong to Cincinnati 25-16.
Neither team could build a lead in set two as the evenly matched clubs went back and forth during the early stages of the game. Butler enjoyed a 15-12 lead before the first timeout of the set. The Bearcats scored out of the stoppage, sparking a UC run which would tie the contest at 15-15. The second timeout would be called by Sharon Clark with the 'Dawgs facing a 19-17 deficit. Anna Logan scored the first point after the stoppage and Mary Striedl tied the contest with a kill.
Marrisa Collier made her first appearance of the weekend to serve and the strategy paid off with Butler taking a 22-21 lead down the stretch. Beck recorded a kill that put BU at set point and Lilly would tie the match with a game-winning kill.
Cincinnati got out in front in set three and by the halfway point Butler was forced into calling a timeout trailing 14-8. The pivotal set was never in question as Cincinnati moved in front 2-1 with the 25-14 victory.
Set four once again featured the visitors jumping out in front to take the momentum. Butler tried to regroup with a timeout at 10-6. The lead would grow to 14-7 and a second BU timeout would be called with the match on the line.
The Bearcats hit their stride to score four-straight out of the timeout, but a service error would give Butler the serve. The scoring run would ultimately give Cincinnati the cushion that they needed to win the match as the fourth was finished at 25-15
Butler will return to action next weekend by hosting the 2015 Butler Invitational at Hinkle Fieldhouse. The rest of the tournament field will include Youngstown State, Missouri and Southern Illinois.
