@ButlerWSoccer Earns 2-1 Win Over IPFW

Box Score

INDIANAPOLIS – The Bulldogs improved to 6-2-1 overall with a 2-1 victory against the visiting IPFW Mastodons on Sunday afternoon. The two teams went into the half tied at 1-1, but Paige Monaghan would come up with the game-winner in the second half to lift BU to victory.

The game-winning goal started with Serina Kashimoto breaking down her defender to create some space. Kashimoto played the ball through to Monaghan in the middle of the field. Monaghan took a touch and then fired a shot from 20 yards away that beat the keeper to the left side.

"The coaches have told me not to think of myself as a freshman," Paige Monaghan stated after the match. "I have been told to be aggressive, go to goal and take some shots. I was able to do that today and I missed a couple, but I had a relentless desire to keep going and hopefully get one which we did today."

Monaghan and Kashimoto connected for the second goal of the game, but the Bulldogs were able to get on board first thanks to a double assist goal from freshman Halle Stelbasky. The newcomer posted her team-high seventh goal of the season on a feed from Maria Collica that started off the foot of Randi DeLong. Stelbasky had to slide to get her foot on the ball and the shot would find the back of the net to the right side of the goal.

Butler held the upper hand in possession even though the outcome was very close. The Bulldogs ended the match with 26 shots compared to just three from IPFW. Corner kicks also favored the home team 4-0.

The flow of the game was exactly what I expected," Co-Head Coach Rob Alman explained. "We knew we could press. I thought we pressed very high and very well for the entire game and that led to a lot of possession for us. It was just a case of being patient and finding the goals."

Butler was able to find two goals against IPFW goalkeeper Kiley Dunning who ended the day with 13 saves. Dunning was under pressure all afternoon with Butler taking 15 shots on goal.

Goalkeeper Kim Janitz was credited with the win for the Bulldogs. Janitz, a late addition to the roster, played all 90 minutes with Madison Card sidelined due to injury.

"I was very nervous but also very excited," Kim Janitz said after the match. "It was a great opportunity to come out and do what I do best."

Butler will return to action with a road test at Bowling Green and then stay on the road with a match at Kentucky which will be aired live on the SEC Network.
