Box Score Senior quarterback Matt Shiltz had 293 yards passing and another 78 on the ground, accounting for four Butler touchdowns and leading the Bulldogs to a resounding 41-10 win at Taylor Saturday night. Butler improves to 2-1 on the young season with the win, while the Trojans fall to 1-2.
Taylor jumped out to an early 10-7 lead before Butler rolled to 34 consecutive points. Butler's offense started to gain momentum by taking advantage of four interceptions produced by the Bulldogs' defense in the first half
After Taylor opened the scoring with a 17-yard screen pass to Justin Keys for a touchdown, Butler found the scoreboard on a 69-yard punt return by Sam Schrader to tie the score. Taylor would convert a field goal late in the first quarter before the floodgates opened in the second period.
Shiltz led quick scoring drives, finding Danny Cotter for a 67-yard touchdown followed by Brandon Collins for an 11-yard touchdown strike. Two Jonathan Treloar field goals sent Butler into the locker room with a 27-10 lead.
After the intermission, Shiltz orchestrated a pair of touchdown drives, finishing each with a touchdown run. The initial drive of the third quarter was highlighted by a 76-yard pitch and catch to Guy DiBalsamo, where Shiltz caught Taylor in a blitz and hit DiBalsamo in stride on a slant route that found a seam. Shiltz ran the next play in from three yards out. Shiltz capped the scoring three minutes into the final period, faking an end-around and reversing field to set up the option. He kept the ball and ran 77 yards for a touchdown.
Shiltz completed 20 of 33 attempts. Cotter led the Bulldogs with five catches and 110 yards. DiBalsamo added 84 yards receiving as the Bulldogs out-gained the Trojans, 488-246, in total offense. Butler's defense picked off five passes from Taylor quarterbacks. Isaak Newhouse had two of Butler's interceptions. Sean Horan led the team in tackles with four solo and assisting on seven other stops.
Butler returns to action Saturday (Sept. 26) with a home game against Campbell. Kick is set for noon. The game is not only the Pioneer Football League opener for the Bulldogs, but it is also the highlight of Butler's homecoming weekend. A live video feed will be provided through ButlerSports.com.
