Box Score INDIANAPOLIS – The Bulldogs recorded their second BIG EAST win of the season with a 3-0 victory at home against Providence (25-16, 25-11, 27-25). The victory moves Butler's overall record to 5-10 overall.
Anna Logan was once again the driving force behind the Butler offensive attack as she ended the match with a team-high 13 kills. Logan took 41 swings and still managed to post a .268 attack percentage.
Makayla Ferguson was near a double-double with a match-high 30 assists to go along with eight digs. The dig category was important for Butler throughout the contest as Aki Aitsebaomo led the team with 16. Marissa Collier stepped into the lineup to add 13 and senior Natalie Meert was also in the box score with 13.
Defense at the net was solid behind the seven block performance of Makaila Jarema. Fellow freshmen Briana Lilly added five blocks and Logan was in the right spot at the right time repeatedly to record four.
The Bulldogs went on a 4-0 run early in the first set to grab the lead. Providence would hang around and get within two points at 17-15, but a second scoring run from the 'Dawgs pushed the score to 21-15 forcing Providence to call timeout.
BU kept the momentum on their side with a service ace out of the stoppage from Anna Logan and the first set would go to Butler after a Friar attack error.
Set two belonged to Butler from the very start as the team opened up an 11-3 lead before a Providence timeout. The advantage would grow to 18-5 before the second PC timeout. Neither breakup in the action could hold Butler back as the 'Dawgs took a 2-0 lead into the half with a 25-11 win
Each team made some changes for the third set leading to a close contest. The Friars would move ahead with a service ace to break a 14-14 tie, and Butler would respond by calling a timeout to talk things over. Providence stayed in control by outscoring Butler 5-1 after the timeout in attempt to avoid the shutout.
The third set would really heat up in crunch time with Providence leading 20-18. The Bulldogs would push aside a serving error and attack error to knot the score at 22-22 and after a point from each side a PC attack error would get BU to match point.
Providence didn't blink as two-straight kills from Emily Horner gave the Friars a one point lead, but a Butler team block against a Horner attempt would once again tie the game at 25-25.
The 'Dawgs moved in front 26-25 after Marina Rose's attempt sailed long, and a team block from Logan and Lilly would secure the shutout victory.
Butler will return to action with a match at Marquette on Wednesday, Sept. 30. The weekend will feature BU hosting their travel partner Xavier on Saturday, Oct. 3. The match will be aired live on BEDN beginning at 2 p.m.
