Box Score Senior quarterback Matt Shiltz threw for a touchdown and ran for another, but it wasn't enough as the host Sycamores of Indiana State defeated Butler, 52-17 Saturday afternoon.
Shiltz went 13-of-24 through the air for 114 yards and had 76 on the ground to lead the Bulldogs.
Indiana State got out to a 24-0 lead before Shiltz found classmate Marquese Martin-Hayes for a 3-yard touchdown pass with 11:37 to play in the second quarter. Shiltz capped the Butler scoring with a 75-yard touchdown run late in the third quarter, pulling the ball in off the read option. Those Butler scores were sandwiched around a Jonathan Treloar field goal to close the fisrt half.
The Sycamores of the Missouri Valley Conference utilized a powerful running game to score the win. ISU rushed for 303 yards on 34 carries with five of their seven touchdowns coming on the ground. LeMonte Booker led the Sycamores with 137 yards.
Safety Zach LaRoche led the Bulldogs with nine tackles, including eight of the solo variety.
The 3:05 p.m. kick-off did not end until just past 8 p.m. as the game was delayed twice by lightning in the area.
The Bulldogs open the Butler Bowl portion of the 2015 campaign Saturday against Franklin. Kick-off is set for 6:30 p.m.
