Box Score Creighton went to the free throw line 29 times in the second half to outlast Butler, 72-64, Saturday night in Omaha. Kelan Martin led Butler with his third consecutive double-double with 22 points and 11 rebounds. Creighton improves to 14-6 overall and 5-2 in BIG EAST play. Butler falls to 13-6 (2-5).
Butler shot only 33 percent in the contest and made only one three-pointer after the intermission as Creighton rallied from a five-point halftime deficit to win. In addition to Martin's double-double, Kellen Dunham had 20 points and Roosevelt Jones had 11 points and 10 rebounds.
Creighton was led by Maurice Watson, Jr. with 20 points and six assists.
The Bluejays scored the first 11 points of the second half but Butler fought back to pull within three at 53-50. Creighton scored nine of the next 12 points to keep a lead they would not relinquish in the final minutes.
Down by as many as seven in the first half, Martin sparked the Bulldogs in the first half with 17 points. It was his highest-scoring half of the season as Butler took a 34-29 halftime advantage. Neither team shot better than 40 percent in the first 20 minutes, but the Bulldogs were aided by six three-pointers and 16 second-chance points.
The Bulldogs return to action Wednesday (Jan. 27), hosting DePaul at Hinkle Fieldhouse. Tickets are still available for the 7 p.m. game, which will also air nationally on CBS Sports Network.
