Box Score SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. – Seton Hall raced out to a 34-12 lead in the first quarter against Butler on Sunday afternoon and never looked back to record the 98-77 victory. With the loss, Butler falls to 7-13 overall and 2-7 in conference.
Head Coach Kurt Godlevske went with a new starting lineup that included four freshmen and a sophomore. Taylor Buford and Nicole Orr each started for the first time in their young BU careers. That duo was joined by Brittany Ward, Alexa Bailey and Sydney Buck.
The new look didn't get results as Seton Hall opened up a 22-point cushion after the first quarter. Aleesah Powell sparked the strong start by scoring 15 points in just 10 minutes. She hit four of her six 3-point field goal attempts and was joined in the scoring column by Tabatha Richardson-Smith and Tiffany Jones who added eight each.
SHU continued to knock down shots from distance in the second quarter. The Pirates hit eight of their first 13 attempts from 3-point land forcing Butler to burn a timeout.
The Bulldogs regained their composure after the stoppage and ended up beating Seton Hall 17-16 in the second. BU beat the press on multiple trips and got a strong offensive showing from Buford and Orr. The freshman duo combined to score 15 of Butler's 17 points in the quarter.
The third quarter was a track meet with Seton Hall outscoring Butler 29-27 to take a 79-56 lead into the fourth. Ward got going in the third to score seven points and a couple 3-point field goals from Buck allowed her to chip in with eight.
The Pirates eliminated any chance of a comeback with a strong start to the fourth. Richardson-Smith helped push the SHU lead to 92-62 at the final media timeout of the game.
Butler played hard to the final buzzer and ended the game with four players in double figures. Both Orr and Buford set new career-high scoring totals with 18 and 13 respectively. The team leader in points was shooting guard Sydney Buck who got rolling in the second half to score 20. Belle Obert was also a factor for the Bulldogs finishing the contest with 15 points, four assists, three rebounds and a block.
The one-two punch of Richardson-Smith and Powell combined to score 49 of Seton Hall's 98 points on Sunday. Other Pirates to impact the outcome included Tiffany Jones who put up 14 points and nine rebound and center Lubirdia Gordon who scored six points, grabbed five boards and protected the rim with two blocked shots.
Butler will return to action on Friday, Jan. 29 with an away game at Xavier. Tip-off is slated for 7 PM.
