Game Notes
INDIANAPOLIS – The Butler women's basketball team will try to break into the win column on Sunday afternoon with a 1 PM game against the Bradley Braves. The Bulldogs took a 68-59 setback to East Tennessee State on Friday night in the 2016-17 season opener.
Freshman
Kristen Spolyar led Butler with 25 points, seven rebounds and three steals against the Bucs. Spolyar came off the bench to do a majority of her damage in the second half. She scored 11 of Butler's 20 points in the third quarter and followed that effort up with 13 points in the fourth quarter.
Spolyar was the only Bulldog to reach a double figure scoring total although three other came close.
Tori Schickel flirted with a double-double by scoring nine points and adding eight rebounds. The starting backcourt of
Michelle Weaver and
Sydney Buck each added eight points.
The Bradley Braves also kicked off the 2016-17 season with a loss. Kent State earned a lopsided 77-52 home win against Bradley on Friday night to give Head Coach Todd Starkey his first career victory on the sideline.
Bradley was led by Vanessa Markert and Leti Lerma, two talented bigs on the roster that combined for 23 points and 12 rebounds. Lerma was a stat sheet stuffer by adding two blocks, two steals and one assist in 33 minutes of action.
Bradley shot 31 percent from the field and just 3-of-17 from 3-point land (17.6%). Turnovers and bench points also hurt the Braves chances of winning as 19 BU miscues led to 19 Kent State points. Bradley only got 14 points from their bench, a total that Kent State doubled.
