Spolyar Named BIG EAST Freshman of the Week
Spolyar repeats as the top rookie in the league, averaging 16.5 points, 6.0 rebounds, 2.5 steals and .520 shooting, including a .500 clip from deep. In Wednesday's win over Fort Wayne, Spolyar posted 16 points off 7-of-13 shooting, sinking 2-of-3 attempts from beyond the arc, and adding six caroms and a pair of steals. In a single-digit setback at Wisconsin on Sunday, the freshman guard totaled 17 points, six boards and three steals, connecting on 6-of-12 attempts from the field. Spolyar is the league's highest scoring freshman so far, averaging 17.3 points per game to rank fifth among all BIG EAST players.
Weaver Lands on BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll
Weaver averaged 21.0 points, 3.5 assists, 3.0 rebounds and 2.0 steals in a 1-1 week for the Bulldogs. She reached the 20-point mark in both contests, including a game-high 22 in Wednesday's win over Fort Wayne and a game-best 20 at Wisconsin on Sunday.
All-Time Series
Butler is 4-0 against UCF in the all-time series. The first-ever meeting between the two programs was played back during the 1981-82 season in the AIAW National Tournament, held in Oskaloosa, Iowa. Butler won by the final score of 69-61. The most recent matchup featured the Bulldogs defeating the Knights by eight points in 2015-16 (71-63).
Keys To The Game
Butler has to limit their turnovers against the Knights on Tuesday night to increase their chances of winning. UCF opponents are averaging 22 turnovers a game. The Bulldogs also need to fix their fourth quarter woes. BU is +23 in the third quarter, but -30 in the fourth. On Sunday afternoon, BU took a two-point lead into the final 10 minutes at Wisconsin, but fell by the final score of 60-55.
Short Bench
The Bulldogs are banged up at the start of the 2016-17 season.
Brittany Ward hasn't been able to play at all during the regular season after suffering a foot injury during the second exhibition contest against Southern Indiana. BU has also been without
Sydney Shelton and
Taylor Buford for a majority of the season. The good news for BU is that sophomore point guard
Alexa Bailey returned to action at Wisconsin. Bailey logged 24 minutes of playing time in her 2016-17 debut. The bad news is that the team will be without
Sydney Buck who is currently sidelined with a lower extremity injury. Buck had started in 64 consecutive games before missing Sunday's tilt.
Home Cookin'
Three of Butler's first four games were played inside Hinkle Fieldhouse. That trend will continue with BU playing three of their next four games on their home court. BU will host UCF, South Florida and Ball State with the lone road trip coming at TCU on Wednesday, Nov. 30.
Shake It Up
Butler has used multiple players in their starting lineup this year with only
Tori Schickel and
Shae Brey starting in all four games. UCF is similar with Fifi Ndour and Tolulope Omokore representing the only Knights to start in all four games.
National Rankings
As a team, Butler ranks 48th in the NCAA with 40 steals. The Bulldogs also rank 50th in free throws made (58) and 55th in free throw attempts (82). Forward
Tori Schickel ranks 32nd in total rebounds (39), 42nd in steals (11) and 77th in minutes played (136).
Kristen Spolyar ranks 61st in total points (69) and 63rd in field goals made (25).
Michelle Weaver ranks 48th in the NCAA with 18 made free throws.
