FORT WORTH, Texas – The TCU Horned Frogs recorded a 73-47 victory over the visiting Butler Bulldogs on Wednesday afternoon to improve to 5-1 on the young season. With the setback, Butler moves to 2-4 overall.
The opening five minutes belonged to Butler, but the Horned Frogs would counter by taking a three-point lead into the second quarter. AJ Alix got hot from 3-point range to bring TCU back. She ended the game 4-for-8 from distance to net 13 points.
3-point shooting was a major factor in the outcome as the Horned Frogs knocked down 11 of their 23 attempts to shoot 48% from behind the arc. BU hit a pair of triples in the first quarter, but would end the game just 4-for-17 from 3-point range.
Alix was one of three Horned Frogs to reach a double figure scoring total. Amber Ramirez led all players with a game-high 19 points. She shot 5-for-8 from 3-point land while adding three rebounds and an assist in 32 minutes. Jada Butts also impacted the game with 10 points, six boards and six assists.
Butler was led by
Tori Schickel who scored 11 of her team-high 12 points in the third quarter. Schickel did all the heavy lifting for BU in the third, but was taken away in the fourth allowing TCU to end the game on a 28-8 scoring run.
Schickel was credited with a double-double by adding a season-high 15 rebounds to her stat line. She was also sound defensively with four steals and two blocked shots.
The only other Bulldog to reach double figures was freshman
Kristen Spolyar. She finished the contest with 11 points and six rebounds. BU did get a lift from
Sydney Shelton and
Taylor Buford who both returned to action today after missing time due to injury. Shelton scored nine points while Buford added seven.
Butler played in a tough environment Wednesday afternoon as the TCU Horned Frogs welcomed in nearly 4,000 fans as part of their Elementary Day promotion. The rowdy crowd didn't faze the young Bulldog team as Butler came out of the gate to score the first 12 points of the contest.
Michelle Weaver was the driving force to the hot start as she scored six of her eight points in the opening frame.
It was a different ballgame after the media timeout however as Ray broke the scoreless streak and then found Alix for three first quarter 3-point field goals. The Bulldogs scored 13 points in each of the first three quarters then dropped off to just eight in the fourth. TCU made an adjustment and came out of the half with a half-court, trapping zone look that forced Butler into new offensive sets. BU shot 29 percent from the field (17-58) while the home team made 25 of their 58 attempts (43%).
The Bulldogs will look to rebound this weekend when they host both South Florida and Ball State at Hinkle Fieldhouse.
