Box Score PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. – The game between Butler and Indiana came down to the wire on Sunday morning but in the end, the Hoosiers would come up with a run in the bottom of the ninth inning to break the 1-1 tie and earn the win.
Butler's Nick Morton was awesome against IU on Sunday by tossing eight full innings and limiting the Hoosiers to just one earned run off six hits. He struck out three batters and didn't issue a single walk.
The lone run that Morton did give up came in the bottom of the second inning. Craig Dedelow led off with a double down the right field line and a groundout during the next at-bat advanced him to third. Morton hit the next batter to put runners on the corners and the first run of the game would come home soon after on and RBI groundout by Isaiah Pasteur.
Butler nearly got the run back for Morton in the top of the third, but Michael Diviesti was stranded at third base. BU threatened again in the fourth as Tyler Houston reached third with just one out, but the Hoosiers would buckle down and hold onto the 1-0 advantage.
With each pitcher performing well for their respective clubs, the game moved quickly to the top of the eighth inning where the Bulldogs were able to tie the game at 1-1. Houston singled to center field which sent Drew Small home to score the lone Bulldog run of the game.
Morton stayed on the hill in the bottom of the eighth to retire the Hoosiers in order, but the Bulldogs would make a change in the ninth, going with Josh Goldberg in relief. Goldberg got off to a nice start by striking out Craig Dedelow, but the next batter delivered a single through the left side.
Goldberg hit the next batter he faced giving IU two baserunners on with just one and out Butler would try out a new arm in Tyler Rathjen. The game would come to an end during the very next at-bat as a Butler error in leftfield would allow IU to score a game-winning unearned run.
