Box Score PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. – The Butler baseball team defeated an ACC opponent for the first time in 20 years on Monday afternoon by recording a 12-10 victory over the Boston College Eagles. Butler scored five runs in the second inning and exploded for seven more runs in the fourth to come out on top.
The second inning got off to a rocky start as BC grabbed an early lead with four runs off five hits in the top half of the frame. Butler would fight back to record seven hits that resulted in five runs to take the slim lead.
The two-out rally in the second inning got going with a single from Michael Hartnagel that moved Chris Marras to second. Drew Small would record the first RBI of the day for BU with his single through the gap at short and a follow up single from Gehrig Parker would load the bases with Tyler Houston waiting on deck.
Houston stayed hot at the plate on Monday as he delivered a base-clearing triple to left centerfield. The inning would continue with Jordan Lucio recording a base knock to right, sending Houston home for the go-ahead run.
The slim advantage would be erased in the top half of the fourth inning as Boston College went to work by adding three runs. Butler would once again respond in the bottom half as they took the game over with seven runs off six hits.
Everyone got involved in the fourth, but the action would get underway with a lead-off double from Small. He came around to score during the very next at-bat with Parker smacking a single back up the middle for an RBI.
Houston kept the hit train rolling with a single through the left side and then Lucio would crank a double to left scoring Parker.
The Eagles went with a pitching change as John Witkowski entered the game for Carmen Giampetruzzi. The strategy wouldn't work as Witkowski hurled a wild pitch that led to a run and then walked Chris Marras, the first batter he faced.
Butler would quickly load the bases as Witkowski issued yet another walk, this time to Connor Dall. Boston College would stick Witkowski on the mound despite his control issues, and Witkowski would recover by getting a 6-4-3 double play. Lucio scored on the putout, but the Eagles gladly took two outs.
Witkowski's struggles would continue as he walked Garrett Christman after the double play. Christman took off and got into scoring position by swiping second base. A passed ball would then allow Maranto to score and move Christman over to third.
Witkowski would face one more batter before being replaced as Hartnagel doubled to left to score Christman. The final run would come against Jack Nelson as Small singled to center that sent Hartnagel around to score.
BC scored one in the fifth to creep closer and a triple in the sixth would score two. The Eagles wouldn't get any closer however as neither team could produce a run over the final three innings. Butler ended the seventh, eighth and ninth inning all by striking out the final batter.
The Bulldogs used four arms to secure the victory. Danny Pobereyko got the start and ended up with the win by tossing the first five innings. Five of the eight runs that went against Pobereyko were earned.
Tyler Rathjen took the mound for a lone inning in relief of Pobereyko and was touched up with two runs off three hits. He would then give the ball to Brock Balderson who limited BC to just one hit in his two innings of work. The save would go to Zach Barnes who struck out two batters in the top of the ninth. The save was Barnes first of the season.
The Bulldogs will return to action on Wednesday with single game against Central Michigan. First pitch is slated for 1 PM.
