Box Score Butler traveled to New York and split a pair of games with host St. John's over the weekend. In a suspended game from Saturday, the Red Storm won, 6-4, in the opener before the Bulldogs rebounded to pull out a 3-2 win in the seventh inning of game two. After the decisions, Butler is 22-15 on the season and 5-3 in BIG EAST play. St. John's is 19-17 (3-5).
The opener was actually continued from Saturday when rain suspended play for the day in the top of the fourth. At that point, the game was tied at two. Kaitlin Doud's two-run single in the third answered a two-run homer by SJU's Christina Melendez in the second.
St. John's put a single run on the board in the fifth followed by three runs in the sixth. The Bulldogs had a two-out rally in the seventh when Maggie MacBeth doubled and Sarah Dixon was hit by a pitch. Brandyce Sallee doubled both of them in to pull the score within two at 6-4. St. John's was able to close out the game with the tying run at the plate.
MacBeth had three of Butler's six hits and Dixon scored two of the team's four runs. Kristin Gutierrez pitched 4.2 innings for Butler between Saturday and Sunday, allowing five earned runs. The loss dropped her to 8-7 on the season. Kacey Starwalt pitched a scoreless 1.1 innings in relief on Saturday before play was suspended. Gutierrez started in the circle when play resumed Sunday.
Grace Kramer got the complete game win for St. John's, improving to 10-8 on the season.
In the second game, pinch runner Jenna Foreman scored the game-winner in a wild seventh inning. Sallee singled to the lead off the inning and Foreman ran for her. With one out, Foreman stole second and advanced to third on a throwing error by the catcher. She ended up scoring on a throwing error from St. John's center fielder to give Butler a 3-2 lead and the win.
MacBeth had three hits for Butler, while Sallee and Doud added two each. Chelsea Norwood had a two-run single in the top of the first to give Butler a 2-0 advantage. The Red Storm responded with single runs in both the first and second to tie the game.
Mikeila Boroff went the distance for Butler, allowing five hits and two runs (one earned). She struck out six and improved to 6-3 on the season.
Kramer relieved McKenzie Murray in the fifth inning and allowed the unearned run in the seventh to take the loss (10-9).
Butler has a pair of midweek games before returning to BIG EAST play next weekend at DePaul. The Bulldogs travel to Indiana State Tuesday followed by a Thursday contest at Notre Dame.
