Box Score TERRE HAUTE – Fans that attended the game between Butler and Indiana State on Friday night at Bob Warn Field were treated to some free baseball as the two clubs ended the scheduled nine innings tied up at 9-9. In the end, a walk-off grand slam by the Sycamores would give Indiana State the win in the bottom of the 14th inning.
Scoring opened up in the first with the home team pushing two runs across in the bottom half of the inning. Butler responded in the second inning off a Gehrig Parker solo shot.
Each team went quietly in the third, but the fourth gave Indiana State a 6-1 advantage as they tacked on four runs. The Sycamores scored one run in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings but a late charge from Butler would send the game into extras as they scored two in the sixth, four in the seventh and two more in the eighth.
Each offense was rolling from the very start. Butler nearly got on the board in the first with Hartnagel moving all the way around to third base, but back-to-back strikeouts would keep the teams deadlocked at 0-0.
The bottom of the frame went to the Sycamores as Indiana State received a two-out, two-RBI single from Kaden Moore. Parker's first home run of the season would momentarily stop the momentum, but ISU came back to score four more runs in the fourth inning. A triple to right center from Andy Young scored the first run of the game and then a costly error would allow Young to score. The final two runs of the inning were unearned with Clay Dungan recording a single followed shortly by a double to right center by Chris Ayers.
Yet another unearned error would reach home plate for Indiana State in the bottom of the fifth inning to increase their lead.
Butler finally caught a break in the sixth inning as Chris Maranto hit a bases loaded, two-out, two-RBI single that scored both Chris Marras and Jordan Lucio.
Indiana State's lead would move back to 8-3 in the bottom half with Moore scoring off a wild pitch.
The Bulldogs wouldn't go down without a fight as a four-run seventh inning would get BU within one run. BU scored four runs off just one hit as a pitching change and error would help extend the inning.
Hartnagel scored on the error and Drew Small would reach home plate after a Lucio groundout, the first out of the inning. Both Tyler Houston and Chris Marras would move up after a wild pitch. Houston scored on the play while Marras took third base. Connor Dall would allow Marras to score with his sac fly to deep centerfield.
With the game on the line, Butler made a pitching change that sent Danny Pobereyko to the mound in the bottom of the seventh. The Sycamores were able to double their lead with a two-out RBI single. Hunter Owen made the most of his opportunity to extend the lead. He walked as the second batter of the inning, moved to second on a wild pitch, advanced to third on a passed ball then ran home on the single to left.
Butler didn't make things easy on themselves in the top of the eighth as a new Indiana State pitcher would fan the first two batters he faced. Hartnagel would break up the strikeout spree with a single and a double from Drew Small would put each runner in scoring position.
Houston, who returned to the lineup tonight after missing time due to injury, hit an RBI single in the eighth that would clear the bases and tie the game at 9-9. The Sycamores would get one on in the bottom of the ninth, but an inning-ending double play would send the two clubs into extra innings.
The 10th, 11th, 12th and 13th innings went quick with just one hit being recorded. The 14th would be the last however as a Butler pitching change sealed the win for Indiana State. Zach Barnes replaced Pobereyko and struggled immediately. Barnes hit the first batter he faced then walked the second. After hitting yet another batter the bases would be loaded with no outs. Hunter Owen would then take Barnes deep and out of the park for the game-winning grand slam.
