Box Score Butler finished off its weekend series with Providence in convincing fashion, posting a 9-1 win in six innings on Sunday afternoon in Indianapolis. The home crowd – including a number of young softball players in attendance for Youth Day -- went home happy as Butler took two of three in the series. The Bulldogs are now 21-14 on the season and 4-2 in BIG EAST play. PC is 13-17 (1-4).
Butler had 14 hits on the afternoon, including a 3-for-3 performance by freshman first baseman Kaitlin Doud. Maaggie MacBeth, Brandyce Sallee, Alyssa Lach, and Riley Carter each added two hits.
The Bulldogs got on the board first with an RBI single from Doud to score Sarah Dixon in the bottom of the first. Providence would respond in the top of the second as Brittney Veler walked to lead off the inning and scored on a passed ball with two outs.
That unearned run was the only run allowed by Butler starter Kristin Gutierrez, who surrendered only one hit over six innings. She struck out four and walked four.
Butler put the game out of reach with three runs in the fourth and five in the sixth. A two-run single by Sallee highlighted the fourth inning and a two-run double by Lach spearheaded the sixth. A Carter single with two outs in the bottom of the sixth scored pinch runner Addison Baumle and gave the Bulldogs the eight-run advantage to end the contest.
Gutierrez improves to 9-6 on the season. Christina Rameriz (6-5) took the loss for PC, one day after defeating the Bulldogs in Saturday's second game of the doubleheader. She allowed four runs (one earned) and eight hits in 3.2 innings. Taylor Huntly allowed five runs in relief.
Butler returns to action Thursday at home as the Bulldogs and IUPUI will complete the game from earlier this week that was postponed after four innings due to rain. The teams will pick things up with the first pitch of the fifth inning at 6 p.m.
The Bulldogs then travel to St. John's for a weekend series, with two games Saturday and one Sunday in New York.
