Box Score
INDIANAPOLIS – The St. John's Red Storm came up with a 62-41 win at Butler on Thursday night by holding BU to just 30 percent shooting from the field. The Bulldogs were limited to just one made field goal in the first quarter and two down the stretch in the fourth quarter.
Butler scored the first three points of the game, but would give up the lead midway through the opening quarter and never get it back. After a steal and a score from
Kristen Spolyar, St. John's would post a 13-0 scoring run to take control of the action.
Tori Schickel picked up two quick fouls which offset the BU game plan and the St. John's defense would settle in to make life difficult for the Bulldogs. BU hit just one of their 10 field goal attempts in the first quarter and wouldn't score again until the 6:21 mark in the second quarter when
Sydney Shelton dropped a triple from behind the arc.
Butler got within four points of St. John's two separate times in the third quarter, but never made a timely basket to get any closer. Any chance of a comeback would be shot down early in the fourth as BU shot just 2-for-12 over the final 10 minutes of play.
Spolyar and Schickel once again led the offense for the Bulldogs. Each player posted 10 points by making three field goals. Schickel added a team-high eight rebounds while Spolyar chipped in with six boards, four steals and a pair of assists.
St. John's reached their overall point total by using a balanced offensive attack. Four of the five starters reached a double figure scoring total with Aaliyah Lewis leading the way with 11. St. John's scored 17 second chance points by collected 11 offensive rebounds. They also forced 19 BU turnovers which resulted in 18 points.
Butler will now look ahead to their Sunday matchup at Xavier which will tip at 2 PM on BEDN.
