The Butler men placed second Saturday at the BIG EAST Championships in Kenosha, Wis. The Bulldogs placed five runners in the top 20, each earning All-BIG EAST accolades.
Freshman
Barry Keane paced the Bulldogs, navigating the 8k course in 24:52.5, finishing fifth overall. Senior
Matt Lumbar was seconds behind with a time of 24:55.4, finishing sixth.
Johnny Leverenz (25:04.5) finished tenth, with
Evan Johnson (25:10.5) and
Euan Makepeace (25:23.3) not far behind, finishing 14
th and 19
th, respectively.
Jonathan Collier (25:36.7, 23
rd) and
Eric Baugh (25:51.6, 29
th) rounded out the Butler seven.
"We were winning 35 to 41 at the 5K mark with Euan at the front of the race," said coach
Matt Roe. "His physical setback limits his ability to run downhill. The score flipped on the downhill portion late in the race where he was compromised. He ran courageously to ensure second place for the team."
"It was a gutsy race for all our men. They are all a bit gutted right now. They came in running to win, and they did everything they could to take the title. I am proud of this group. The future is bright."
Keane, Lumbar and Leverenz, with their top-10 finishes, earned All-BIG EAST first-team honors. Johnson and Makepeace receive second-team honors.
As a team, the men were 14 points behind Georgetown, which won the event. Villanova placed third, followed by Providence. This is Georgetown's third straight BIG EAST championship title. Jonathan Green of Villanova won the individual event in a time of 24:27.6.
The Butler women finished seventh in the team event. Villanova won the event for the third straight year, followed by Providence and Georgetown.
Sophomore
Josephine Thestrup led the Bulldogs, navigating the 6K course in 21:05.8, placing 17
th and earning BIG EAST second-team honors. Freshman
Angelina Ellis followed with a time of 21:56.3, finishing 32
nd.Â
Hannah Hartzell was the third Bulldog across the line, finishing the course in 22:17.6 and placing 39
th.

Kristen Johnson (23:08.9, 51
st),
Kara Stark (23:38.7, 56
th), and
Allison Miller (24:14.1, 66
th) also competed for the Bulldogs.
Catarina Rocha of Providence won event with a time of 19:59.0.
The Bulldogs are back in action on Nov. 10, running in the NCAA Great Lakes Regional in Terre Haute, Ind.
