Whitney Jennings and
Kristen Spolyar combined for 52 points as Butler wrapped up their non-conference slate with a 60-51 win at Indiana State on Thursday afternoon. The Bulldogs dominated the action inside, winning the points in the paint battle 28-10.
Schickel scored a game-high 23 points on 9-of-18 shooting. She added five rebounds and four blocked shots to her stat line. Jennings was in the box score with 16 points while Spolyar came off the bench to add 13. Half of Jennings points came from the free throw line with the Bulldogs closing out the contest with nine-straight points from the charity stripe.
Rounding out the scoring total was
Iman Lathan,
Sydney Buck and
Shae Brey. Lathan scored three points, but grabbed a season-high eight rebounds in the victory. Buck hit a 3-ball for the Bulldogs and Brey would record the final field goal of the game for BU with just under three to play.
Butler scored the first six points of the game to help win the first quarter 13-9. Schickel had the first four points of the contest and Spolyar would come off the bench to hit a jumper to extend the scoring run.
Indiana State cut the deficit to just one at 10-9, but Jennings would dial up from long distance with less than a minute to play to give the Bulldogs a cushion.
Alexis Delgado was the story of the second quarter. The junior from Arizona came off the Indiana State bench to hit four 3-point field goals. She entered the contest averaging just six points per game.
Ashli O'Neal hit Indiana State's first triple of the second frame to tie the score at 15-15. Butler responded with a 6-0 scoring run, but Delgado answered with three-straight triples to put ISU on top 24-21.
BU would end the second quarter on a 9-3 run to take a slim 30-27 advantage into the half. Schickel, Jennings and Spolyar accounted for 24 of Butler's 30 points over the opening 20 minutes.
That same trio helped BU build an eight-point lead in the opening stages of the third quarter. Butler outscored Indiana State 7-2 over the first four minutes of the third which forced Indiana State to call for a timeout.
Wendi Bibbins picked up her third personal foul in the third quarter which sent her to the ISU sideline. The Sycamores would stick around however after an old-fashion 3-point play from O'Neal and yet another triple from Delgado. Delgado would go scoreless the rest of the way, but was named the Player of the Game for ISU with 15 points. O'Neal shared the team scoring lead with 15 points of her own while Bibbins just missed a double-double by posting eight points and nine rebounds.
Butler didn't score over the final four minutes of the third quarter, but their defense held up allowing them to hang onto a five-point lead.
Butler led by seven (49-42) at the under-five media timeout in the fourth. Jennings and Schickel combined to score all seven points for the 'Dawgs. Team defense and free throw shooting would get Butler to the finish line. Indiana State shot just 32 percent from the field for the game and BU shot 16-for-23 from the line to seal the win.
Butler returns to action on Friday, Dec. 29 with a home game against BIG EAST foe Xavier. Tip-off on FS2 is slated for 7 PM at Hinkle Fieldhouse.
