Marquette Holds Off @ButlerWBB 72-66

Box Score

INDIANAPOLIS – The Bulldogs put together one of their best games of the season Friday night against Marquette, but it wasn't quite enough to pull out the victory. Butler knocked down 14 3-point field goals and dished out a season-high 18 assists, but the Golden Eagles would hang on to claim a 72-66 victory.

There were three ties and 13 lead changes between the two clubs on Friday night at Hinkle Fieldhouse. Marquette took a two-point advantage into the final 10 minutes and would free throw out the victory by outscoring BU 25-21 in the final frame.

Sydney Buck led the way for BU by scoring a season-high 21 points on 7-of-15 shooting from 3-point range. Buck was just two 3-point field goals shy of the school record while Butler as a team finished the contest just two triples shy of the team record of 16.

Michelle Weaver came up with 14 points for BU and Sydney Shelton provided a lift early in the game for the Bulldogs by recording 11 of her 13 points in the opening quarter.

Sophomore forward Tori Schickel once again was greeted with a double team by the Golden Eagles. Schickel responded by recording a career-high six assists to go with nine points and team-high 12 rebounds. She also added two blocks in 40 minutes of action.

Marquette was led by Erika Davenport who posted a double-double with 19 points and 11 rebounds. Davenport worked inside out for the Golden Eagles and was joined in double figures by Allazia Blockton, Natisha Hiedeman and Danielle King. Blockton came off the bench to net 14 points and provide Marquette with eight rebounds and five assists. Hiedeman just missed a double-double with 14 points and nine rebounds. King chipped in with 13 points, five boards and three steals.

The first quarter featured back and forth action with Marquette clinging to a one-point lead after 10 minutes. The second quarter was unique in that each team went on a 7-0 scoring run. BU came out hot, but a lengthy scoring drought would allow Marquette to score seven-straight. Each team would add a 3-pointer in the later stages of the quarter to give MU the one-point advantage at the break.

Marquette would edge BU by one point in the third, but would never relinquish the lead down the stretch. The Golden Eagles made 15 of their 18 free throw attempts to ice the game and pick up their 18th win of the season. With the setback, BU moves to 5-19 on the year.

Butler will return to action on Sunday afternoon with a contest against No. 16 DePaul. Tip is set for 1 PM.
