Hoyas Hold Off @ButlerWBB 83-72

Box Score

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Butler and Georgetown entered the final 10 minutes of action on Friday night tied up at 55-55. Hoya reserve guard Mykia Jones would separate the two teams by scoring 15 of her 17 points in the final frame to secure the 83-72 Georgetown victory.

Jones reached a double figure scoring total for just the fifth time this season, but she did it in crunch time against the Bulldogs. She hit what looked to be back-to-back 3-pointers early in the fourth, but after a video review, a replay would show her foot on the line during the first attempt.

The stoppage wouldn't slow down Jones who added a layup, two more 3-pointers and a pair of free throws to her scoring total in the fourth. Jones was one of four Hoyas to reach double figures. Dorothy Adomako led Georgetown with 21 points, Dionna White battled foul trouble all evening, but still managed to score 16 points and center Cynthia Petke posted a double-double with 11 points and 12 boards.

The most impressive double-double of the game belonged to Tori Schickel who once again played well against Georgetown with a game-high 25 points to go along with 14 rebounds. Schickel shot 11-for-19 from the field and added four blocks and two assists to her stat line in 39 minutes of action.

Schickel worked from the block while Sydney Shelton gave BU a lift from the perimeter. Last week's BIG EAST Freshman of the Week recorded 18 points against the Hoyas on Friday night. Four of her seven made field goals were from 3-point range.

Michelle Weaver and Taylor Buford also posted solid numbers for the Bulldogs. Buford scored eight of her 11 points in the third quarter while Weaver gave Butler five of her 11 in the fourth. Weaver also added five assists, a category that was led by Alexa Bailey who notched six in the game.

Butler went 14-for-15 from the charity stripe and ended the game with the same number of rebounds as the Hoyas, but turnovers would end up being a major factor in the outcome. BU recorded 14 turnovers which resulted in 22 Georgetown points. The Hoyas also got out and ran against the Bulldogs by winning fast break points 19-2.

The start of the game belonged to the home team as Georgetown opened up a 21-12 lead after the opening ten minutes. White made an immediate impact scoring the first five points of the game for GU which sparked a 12-4 scoring run. Butler called a timeout to stop the momentum and moments later White would pick up her second personal foul sending her to the sideline. White had 10 points when she left the game, but her absence would help BU take the second quarter 23-18.

Butler opened up the second quarter on a 10-4 scoring run. Schickel really got going in the second to score eight points, but it was the outside shooting from Shelton that opened up the floor. Shelton hit two 3-pointers in the early stages of the quarter to pull the defense out and then the ball would go inside to Schickel.

The Hoyas made some adjustments to deny Schickel in the third, but Buford would step up into a scoring role to allow BU to tie the game at 55-55. The comeback would fall short however with Jones taking over the fourth quarter to lift GU to victory. Jones and Adomako combined to score 25 of Georgetown's 28 points in the final quarter. The Hoyas shot 56 percent from the field, including 54 percent from 3-point range (6-11).

The Bulldogs will return to action on Sunday afternoon with a 1 PM matinee at Villanova. Action will stream live on BEDN.
