Box Score
INDIANAPOLIS – Xavier recorded a 53-43 win at Hinkle Fieldhouse on Saturday afternoon by outscoring Butler 19-4 in the fourth quarter. BU's first field goal of the final frame came with under one minute to play.
The Bulldog offense stalled in the fourth quarter in part to some great team defense from the Musketeers. Xavier held BU to just 1-of-13 shooting in the fourth quarter with the lone field goal coming from
Sydney Shelton with 41 seconds to play. Shelton led Butler in scoring with 12 points. She hit five of her 15 attempts including two shots from 3-point range.
Taylor Buford posted 11 points, four rebounds, three steals and two blocked shots for the Bulldogs. The third member of the team to reach a double figure scoring total was
Sydney Buck who collected 10 points and seven rebounds off the bench.
The Musketeers refused to let
Tori Schickel beat them on Saturday as they used a constant double team and at times a triple team on the BU forward once the ball was entered into the post. Schickel was held to just six points, but made her impact on the boards with a game-high 15 rebounds.
Schickel's counterpart Imani Partlow played great for Xavier. Partlow jumped into the starting lineup and delivered 13 points and six rebounds. Partlow sparked a 7-0 Xavier run in the second quarter once Schickel left the game with her third personal foul.
Xavier's top performer was guard Raeshaun Gaffney who led the way with 13 points and 11 rebounds. Maddison Blackwell was great with her back to the basket on Saturday ending the game with 10 points and seven rebounds. Yet another Musketeer to reach double figures included guard Marquia Turner who tallied 12 points and four boards.
The Musketeers scored 18 points off 19 Butler turnovers. They came out on top in points in the paint (18-10) and in second chance points (11-5).
The game got off to a slow start, but seven-straight points from BU would give the Bulldogs an 11-9 edge after 10 minutes. Partlow and the Musketeers would post their own 7-0 scoring run in the second quarter to take a one-point lead over BU going into the half.
The opening minutes of the third quarter was by far the highlight of the game for BU.
Taylor Buford knocked down a pair of triples from the corner and then Shelton and
Sydney Buck got involved from long range. BU hit 5 3-pointers in the third to regain the lead and outscore Xavier 18-12. The fourth quarter however would belong to Xavier which led to the 53-43 outcome.
The Bulldogs will return to action next weekend with a 7 PM game against Marquette.
