Hoyas Win at Hinkle 63-52

INDIANAPOLIS – Butler moved to 5-5 in the BIG EAST Conference with a 63-52 loss to the Georgetown Hoyas. The Bulldogs led Georgetown by a point at the half 26-25, but Georgetown would double up BU in the fourth quarter 20-10 to claim the road win.

Butler was 9-0 on the year when leading their opponent at the half, but that would change against Georgetown after a flurry of 3-pointers in the fourth quarter. Georgetown flipped the script on Butler in the third to take a one-point lead of their own into the final frame 43-42.

Each side struggled to score in the opening minutes of the fourth, but Whitney Jennings would hit from long distance to knot the score at 48-48. Georgetown's Mikayla Venson would answer moments later with a triple of her own from the right wing.

Venson would come back to hit yet another 3-pointer with 2:48 on the clock, but Jennings would keep BU alive with her fifth three of the contest. The biggest shot of the night would follow as Georgetown got yet another 3-pointer to fall, this time from Dionna White. The last made field goal of the game gave Georgetown a six-point edge with just 1:22 to play and free throws would take us to our final score, 63-52.

Jennings led Butler with 19 points, a scoring total that was match by White of Georgetown. The Hoyas also got a lift from Venson who tallied 17 points and Cynthia Petke who recorded 12.

Tori Schickel ran into traffic and would play a majority of the game facing a Georgetown double team. She ended the game with 11 points and eight rebounds. No other Bulldog would reach a double figure scoring total.

The game started off on a high note for BU with the Bulldogs racing out to a 9-2 lead. Georgetown would cut the gap by hitting four of their next five shots which moved the score to 11-9 at the first media timeout.

Georgetown went cold after the stoppage, hitting just one of their next 10 attempts. BU would take advantage and end the first on a 7-0 scoring run to take a 20-11 lead.

The first quarter lead would quickly disappear with Georgetown winning the second quarter 14-6. Butler committed eight turnovers during that 10-minute span and the Hoyas would end the quarter on their own 7-0 run. The third quarter went back-and-forth with Georgetown winning the third 18-16. The 3-point frenzy in the fourth would push GU over the top to improve their overall record to 9-11 (4-6 BE).

Butler will return to action on Sunday afternoon with a 1 PM tip vs. Villanova.
