AKRON, Ohio –
Tori Schickel and
Kristen Spolyar led Butler to a 63-47 road win at Akron on Saturday afternoon. The duo combined to score 35 points in the outcome. With her efforts on Saturday, Schickel moved to ninth place at Butler on the all-time scoring list (1,345).
Schickel recorded her sixth double-double of the season against the Zips with 15 points to go along with a team-high 12 rebounds. She sparked the scoring run in the third quarter that pushed Butler over the top.
Spolyar did the heavy lifting early, scoring eight points in the first quarter. She ended the game with a team-high 20 points on 7-of-13 shooting. The junior did a little bit of everything on the court to come up with four assists, four rebounds and a team-high four steals.
Schickel controlled the opening tip and would get BU on the scoreboard with a bucket on Butler's first possession. Spolyar followed up with a pair of 3-pointers to build the BU lead, and the Zips were forced to call a timeout trailing 12-4 after the first four minutes of playing time.
Butler's 7-0 run in the first quarter was the difference at the half with each team scoring nine points in the second quarter. Spolyar and Jennings each hit 3-pointers to highlight that stretch.
The third quarter was the difference on Saturday with Butler doubling Akron up in the frame 24-12. Schickel scored 11-straight points in the third to spark a 14-2 scoring run that covered four minutes.
Akron would have to double the post with Schickel scoring on nearly every touch and that adjustment would open up some passing lanes. Butler made 14 total assists on 25 made field goals.
Michelle Weaver led the 'Dawgs with five.
Head Coach
Kurt Godlevske was able to clear the bench with Butler leading by 25 midway through the fourth quarter. The 'Dawgs shot 56 percent from the field in the third and would make half of their attempts in the fourth to post the win.
Butler will return to action on Monday, Dec. 17 with a home game against Indiana State. Tip is set for 7 PM.
