@ButlerUWBB Wins BIG EAST Home Opener over Seton Hall 62-59

INDIANAPOLIS – Butler (13-1, 3-0) came away with a 62-59 win over Seton Hall (9-4, 1-1) on Friday night to remain undefeated in BIG EAST play. The Bulldogs got a huge block from Shae Brey on Seton Hall's final possession. That play paired with free throws down the stretch would seal the 13th win of the season.

The game came down to the final two minutes of the fourth quarter. The Bulldogs were hanging onto a one-point lead at 57-56, but Kaela Hilaire would put the Pirates back on top with a three-point play. Hilaire drove hard to the hole and got the layup plus the foul to give Seton Hall the two-point lead at 59-57.

Tori Schickel would draw a foul on Butlers next trip down and tie the game with two made free throws. Defense would be the story the rest of the way as BU denied SHU to take control of the ball with just 41.2 seconds to play. The ball would find Whitney Jennings in the corner with the shot clock running low. Jennings drove the ball to her right into the paint and would be bumped on the way which would send her to the line. She hit each free throw to give Butler a two-point lead with 17.6 left on the game clock.

Seton Hall Head Coach Anthony Bozzella would go back to Hilaire in crunch time with an isolation play. Hilaire used a crossover gain an advantage and drove the ball hard to the left side. Brey recovered and would meet Hilaire in front of the rim. Brey blocked the layup attempt and BU would come up with the rebound with only three seconds left. After advancing the ball, BU would get Jennings to the free throw line. She made one of two from the stripe and the last second shot from SHU would be off to signal the end of the game.

Hilaire was the only Pirate to find double figures in the scoring column. She ended the night with 15 points and six assists.

Butler's scoring trio on Friday night included Jennings, Schickel and Katherine Strong. Both Schickel and Strong ended the game with a double-double. Schickel led the team with 19 points while adding 11 boards. Strong's first double-double as a Bulldog included 11 points and 10 boards.

Jennings hit three of her four field goals against Seton Hall from 3-point range to help net 17 points. Michelle Weaver also impacted the win by leading the team in both assists (5) and steals (5).

The Bulldogs return to Hinkle Fieldhouse on Sunday, Jan. 6 with a 1 PM start against the St. John's Red Storm. The game can be viewed live on FS2.
