INDIANAPOLIS – Butler went on a 25-0 scoring run in the second half to notch a 20-point win over Creighton on Friday night. The victory moves Butler to 19-5 overall while the Bluejays drop to 11-14.
Butler led 36-32 with 4:53 remaining in the third quarter. By the time the two teams headed to the sideline for the fourth quarter media timeout the Bulldogs would own a 61-32 advantage.
A balanced Bulldog scoring attack featured 13 points from
Kristen Spolyar, 11 from
Tori Schickel and 10 from both
Michelle Weaver and
Whitney Jennings.
Shae Brey just missed double figures with nine points and
Naira Caceres would once again be a spark off the bench with eight points. Rounding out the total was
Emilia Sexton with five.
Creighton would take an early lead due to their 3-point shooting. All four of their made field goals in the first frame were from long range. Butler kept chipping away at the lead and a 6-0 scoring run would give them a two-point cushion after one 14-12.
A 9-0 Butler scoring run in the second would push their lead to double digits at 25-15. Full court pressure helped BU build the lead as they forced Creighton into 10 turnovers by the second quarter media timeout. That ten-point lead would hold all the way to the half 32-22.
Creighton came out of the locker room hot and scored the first six points of the second half. They cut the lead to four before Butler's 25-0 scoring run.
Points in the paint would be a huge factor in the outcome of the game with BU winning the category 42-14. The Bulldogs also turned 20 Creighton turnovers into 21 points.
The Bulldogs defense would limit Creighton to just 28 percent shooting. The Bulldogs shot 80 percent from the field in the fourth to boost their overall percentage to 50 for the game.
Butler will return to action on Sunday, Feb. 17 with a 2 PM game vs. Providence.
