SOUTH ORANGE – The Bulldogs took an 83-62 loss at Seton Hall on Super Bowl Sunday.
Tori Schickel became the all-time rebound leader in Butler women's basketball history in the setback. Schickel pulled down 10 boards against the Pirates to move her career total to 1,052.
Schickel was in the box score with a double-double by adding 13 points to her team-high 10 rebounds. Butler was led in scoring by junior guard
Kristen Spolyar who came up with 14.
Shae Brey would set a new career-high scoring total at Seton Hall with 12 points on 6-of-7 shooting. Brey added five rebounds and an assist to her stat line. The final Bulldog to hit double figures in the scoring column was
Whitney Jennings. She scored 10 points, grabbed three rebounds and dished out three assists.
Michelle Weaver would once again lead the team in assists and steals. She battled foul trouble against the Pirates and was limited to 23 minutes of playing time. She still managed to hand out five assists and record two of Butler's six steals in the game.
The Pirates were led to victory by junior forward Shadeen Samuels. Samuels scored the first 10 points of the game for SHU and would end the first half with 15. She led all players with 27 points.
Three Pirates would handle the scoring load as Inju Butina added 21 and Kaela Hilaire came off the bench with 15. Butina went 11-for-12 from the free throw line and Hilaire was a perfect 8-for-8 from the stripe. Seton Hall took 28 total free throws on their home court while the Bulldogs were limited to 14.
Seton Hall would lead Butler by five points after the first quarter. Back-to-back 3-pointers late in the first would give them that advantage. Butina hit the first triple and Kaity Healy would knock one down from distance with less than a minute to go.
Butler responded with a 6-0 scoring run at the start of the second quarter to grab a 19-18 lead. They would trail by two at the second quarter media timeout (4:54), but would go ice cold after the stoppage.
Seton Hall built a 10-point lead at the half by going on a 9-0 scoring run. Butler didn't make a field goal over the final 6:39 of the second quarter. They were 0-for-10 from 3-point land over the first 20 minutes and were hit with 13 turnovers.
The start of the third quarter set the tone for the rest of the game. Seton Hall went on a 15-9 run over the opening five minutes and would have a 19-point lead after three full quarters.
BU only lost the fourth quarter by two points, but the damage had been done taking us to our final score of 83-62. The loss moves Butler to 17-5 on the season with a 7-4 record against conference foes.
Butler will return to Hinkle Fieldhouse on Friday, Feb. 8 to host the Xavier Musketeers. Tip is set for 7 PM.
