Whitney Jennings and
Kristen Spolyar combined to score 45 points in Butler's 70-52 win over Kent State in the second round of the WNIT. With the victory, the Bulldogs move to 23-9 overall.
Jennings and Spolyar each hit nine shots against the Golden Flashes. Spolyar only missed once from long range, connecting on four-of her five attempts from 3-point land. Jennings would chip in by adding three from behind the arc. The scoring duo helped Butler end the second quarter on a 22-2 scoring run.
Tori Schickel notched a double-double for BU with 12 points and 11 rebounds. Fellow forward
Shae Brey scored seven points and pulled down six boards.
The game opened up with a slow start from each team. BU only made two of their first 11 field goals and Kent State was in the box score with three makes in 12 attempts. The Golden Flashes would own a one-point lead after 10 minutes (6-5), but the game would unfold in the second quarter.
A 3-point field goal from Megan Carter gave the Golden Flashes a 14-8 lead with 7:00 to go in the second quarter. Butler would explode on a 27-2 run after that field goal which led to a 19-point lead with 8:01 to go in the third quarter.
BU outscored Kent State 25-10 in the second quarter and kept their lead intact by winning the third 24-19. The Bulldogs shot 71.4 percent in the second (10-14) and 72.7 in the third (8-11) to grab control of the game.
The Bulldogs will now play the winner of the game between Minnesota and Cincinnati. The Bearcats will host the Golden Gophers tomorrow at 3 PM.
