The Butler women's lacrosse team wrapped up the 2019 season Saturday afternoon, falling to BIG EAST opponent Old Dominion, 18-6. This marks the first BIG EAST win for the Monarchs. The Bulldogs finish the year 3-14, 0-5 BIG EAST.
Old Dominion struck first, scoring the first goal of the game just over a minute in.
Ashley Lizzi quickly answered for the Bulldogs, scoring her first goal of the season to even the score. From there, the Monarchs scored seven straight to take an 8-1 lead over Butler.
The Bulldogs rebounded, with goals from
Ashley Guerra,
Lindsey Schreiber, and
Holly Hall to bring Butler back within four with 11 minutes to play. Old Dominion closed the half on a 5-0 run to take a 13-4 lead into the break.
Butler held the Monarchs scoreless the first seven minutes of the second half before Glory Johnson found the back of the net to put Old Dominion up by 10.
Hannah Justice then answered with a goal of her own. The Monarchs scored two more before Guerra scored her second goal of the game to bring Butler back within 10. Old Dominion tacked on two more before the final whistle was blown.
Glory Johnson led the Monarchs with four goals and two assists. Sophia Richie also added four goals, while Mary Maloney added three. Haleigh Wurzel made 12 saves in the cage in her third win of the season.
Amanda Rumsey finishes the year 3-13 in the cage for the Bulldogs, making three saves in the loss. Freshman
Katie McGrath entered the game at the start of the second half, making five saves. Guerra ends her sophomore campaign leading Butler in goals (28), assists (17), and points (45).
