@ButlerUWBB Wins at Providence 50-47

Box Score
PROVIDENCE – Butler used a late 9-0 scoring run in the fourth quarter to earn their fifth BIG EAST win of the year at Providence on Friday night. Oumou Toure led the Bulldogs with 14 points. The true freshman went 3-for-4 from 3-point range to lead BU to victory.

Toure was the only Bulldog to reach double figures at Alumni Hall. The Bulldogs used their defense to notch their 13th win of the season on the road. A core of experience players along with Toure would win it for BU down the stretch.

Naira Caceres had a terrific spin move that led to a score with less than a minute remaining and Shae Brey would pick off an inbounds pass with just 10 seconds left to ice the win.

Butler was sluggish at the start of the contest, missing their first five shots and committing four turnovers. They were still able to come together after the first media timeout and grab a 13-6 lead after the first 10 minutes of action.

The lead didn't last with Providence opening the second quarter on a 10-2 scoring run to take a slim 16-15 lead. Butler would once again make a statement over the final five minutes of the frame to take a 25-20 lead into the half.

25 points came from six different BU student-athletes. Defense played a large role in the opening 20 minutes with Butler forcing Providence into 15 turnovers. Those miscues led to 12 BU points. End of the game stats were similar. Butler forced 26 total turnovers which resulted in 22 points.

Providence outscored Butler by one in the third quarter to cut the deficit to four at 36-32. That momentum would carry over to the fourth quarter. PC outscored BU 8-2 over the first four minutes of the fourth to take a 40-38 lead. Toure would hit a pair of free throws for Butler before the final stoppage and the two teams would head into the final 4:39 deadlocked at 40-40.

BU scored seven-straight out of the break thanks to Brey and Toure, but Providence would counter with a 6-0 run to get back within a point. In crunch time, Caceres would come up with a huge bucket off a spin move and Brey would ice the win with her second steal of the game.

Kristen Spolyar would lead BU in the rebound column with 10. She also tied Genesis Parker for the team lead in assists with four.

Butler's next game will fall on Sunday, Jan. 26 at Creighton. Tip is set for 1 PM.
