The Bulldogs matched up with a majority of the nation's best programs Friday at the 2021 Nuttycombe Wisconsin Invitational. Butler's women posted a 14th-place finish, while the men were 22nd.

Butler's women came in ahead of nationally-ranked programs Washington (No. 7), Stanford (No. 9), Portland (No. 18), Villanova (No. 20), Indiana (No. 21), Connecticut (No. 26), Furman (No. 28), and Oregon State (No. 30). All but two of the teams that finished ahead of the Bulldogs were ranked in the Top 25 of this week's national coaches poll.

Angelina Ellis was Butler's top performer, navigating the 6k Thomas Zimmer Championship Cross Country Course in Verona, Wis., in a time of 20:48.9. That was good for 43rd among the 266 runners in the field.

West Virginia's Ceili McCabe won the race in 19:57.4. New Mexico, ranked No. 3 this week, edged top-ranked North Carolina State in the final results. New Mexico won with a team score of 93, nine points better than the Wolfpack. Butler's score of 437 placed them in 14th. There were 36 teams in the elite
"A" race field.

Kami Hankins placed 67th and was the second Bulldog across the line (21:05.5). She was followed by teammates Mia Beckham (88th 21:12.7), Maddie McLain (110th; 21:21.6), and Emily Royston (134th; 21:30.8) as Butler's scoring five.

Freshman Quinn Shanahan finished 155th in a time of 21:40.0. Katherine Olsen ran a time of 22:12.1 to finish 204th and Corinna Pena was 220th in 22:22.1.

The men's star-studded field included 10 of the top 16 programs in this week's USTFCCCA poll. The Bulldogs, ranked No. 16 nationally this week, came in 22nd with a score of 478. Iowa State, which entered ranked No. 6, took the invitational title over Stanford (No. 3), Tulsa (No. 12), and host Wisconsin (No. 11). Iowa State had a score of 88 and their line-up featured Wesley Kiptoo, who won the 8k race in 23:11.2.

Simon Bedard was the first Bulldog across the line in 24:10.5. He finished 62nd. He was followed closely by teammate Barry Keane, who finished 66th in 24:11.7. Clark Otte turned in another strong performance with a time of 24:17.9 to finish 75th. Butler's scoring five also included Pierre-Louis Detourbe (111th; 24:35.2) and Jack McMahon (173rd; 25:08.6).

Ryan Adkins was 195th in a time of 25:34.0. James Sweeney posted a time of 26:05.5 to finish 215th. Evan Byrne was forced to pull out prior to the halfway point in the race.

The Bulldogs will host the Stan Lyons Bulldog Invitational Friday at the Northview Church Course in Carmel, Ind. A majority of Butler's line-up will use the next two weeks to prepare for the 2021 BIG EAST Championships, which will be held Friday, Oct. 29 on that same Northview course in Carmel.
