WEST LAFAYETTE – The Butler swim team returned to action over the weekend by competing in the Indiana Intercollegiates meet hosted by Purdue University. Butler ended the day in sixth place out of 12 teams with 83 points. Freshman
Avery Piel was named "Swimmer of the Meet".
"We are racing better, and we are closing our races better which is a good sign that we are getting in better shape," Head Coach
Maurice Stewart explained. "I was impressed with our team's spirit and energy during the meet today."
Freshman
Alani Hightower-Bend had two top-ten performances for the Bulldogs. Hightower-Bend had a season-best time in the 100 Free. She placed sixth with a time of 53.63.
Abigail Roberts and
Issy Petersen also swam in the 100 Free. They finished 26th and 28th respectively.
Hightower-Bend also led BU in the 50 Free. She earned eighth place with a time of 24.64.
Abby Hobrough was the next Bulldog to finish in 23rd (25.93). Other active 'Dawgs in the event included
Emily Landwehr (31st - 26.19) and
Abigail Roberts (32nd - 26.21).
Hightower-Bend, Roberts, Sophie Guyer and
Abigail Nebot joined forces to represent BU in the 200 Medley Relay. That unit placed 10th overall with a season-best time of 1:52.49. Guyer led-off with a 29.16 back. Nebot posted a 31.94 breast, Hightower-Bend went with a 26.14 split in the fly and Roberts finished with a 25.25 time in the free.
The Swim Dawgs had two student-athletes grab 12th place finishes at the meet.
Grace Crane was the top BU swimmer in the 500 Free with a time of 5:21.07. She and
Avery Piel swam well in the 200 Free for BU. Piel took 12th in that event with a personal-best time. Crace was behind her in 26th (2:01.58).
Piel posted a BIG EAST qualifying time in the 100 Fly. She touched the wall at 1:00.23 to take 21st place.
Claire Mastrandrea was just off the BIG EAST Qualifying time. Her solid swim ended with a 24th place finish and a time of 1:01.68.
The 'Dawgs saw more BIG EAST qualifying times in the 100 Breast.
Abigail Nebot and
Allie Carmichael finished back-to-back in 17th and 18th. Nebot raced at 1:10.12 and Carmichael was right there with a time of 1:10.49. Teammate
Alexa Vota also had a solid swim to take 22nd (1:12.04).
Carmichael was also active for BU in the 100 IM. She placed 14th overall with a time of 1:02.49. Nebot and Guyer were next in line for BU going 1:05.12 and 1:05.36 for 26th and 27th place.
The 100 Back was highlighted by
Rachel Geller (1:03.57).
Claire Mastrandrea (1:05.63) and
Abby Hobrough (1:06.00) also competed for the Bulldogs.
Geller was also a member of the 200 Free Relay team that finished 15th with a time of 1:44.90. Piel (25.94) led off with Geller going in the pool next (26.21).
Issy Petersen (27.56) and
Grace Crane (25.19) rounded out the relay team.
