CoSIDA release
AUSTIN, Texas - Butler Athletics and the women's soccer program are proud to announce that Katie Soderstrom has been named to the 2021 CoSIDA Academic All-America Women's Soccer First Team. One of only 11 student-athletes to be recognized on the first team nationally, the Carmel, Ind., native was selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) and announced Friday, Dec. 10.
The honorees selected by CoSIDA represent the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances on the soccer field and in the classroom. Soderstrom, a forward/midfielder for the Bulldogs, is an elementary education major with a 3.99 GPA.
Soderstrom started all 21 matches for Butler this season and led the team with 32 offensive points. She scored 12 goals and was credited with eight assists in a 15-win season that concluded with a trip to the NCAA Tournament. The redshirt-junior was recently named to the All-BIG EAST First Team, her third such honor.
Soderstrom was honored by CoSIDA earlier this season at the All-District level, her third such designation. She is the first student-athlete from the women's soccer program to receive first-team CoSIDA Academic All-America honors. Previously, Amy Morrison earned second-team honors in 2002 and Annika Schmidt was a third-team selection in 2019.
The United Soccer Coaches have a separate Scholar All-America program that Butler student-athletes have been recognized with previously, including Soderstrom who earned national second-team honors in the spring of 2021.
