BIG EAST Play Begins for @ButlerUWBB This Weekend

INDIANAPOLIS – BIG EAST action will get underway this weekend with Butler taking on (RV) DePaul and Marquette. Friday's 8 PM tip will be played at Wintrust Arena against the Blue Demons. The Bulldogs will then travel to the Al McGuire Center to end the weekend with a 3 PM tip vs. the Golden Eagles. Each game can be streamed on FloHoops.com.
 
Bulldog Bits
- Celena Taborn is shooting 75% from the field this year and scored a season-high 17 points at IUPUI.
- Taborn has scored 1,268 career points; the rest of the roster has 1,671.
- Butler had less turnovers than IUPUI in their last game, marking the first time that has happened this season.
- Trinity White has hit a 3-pointer for Butler in every game this year (8-for-27, 29%)
- Zoe Jackson ranks sixth in the BIG EAST with 27 assists. She has 14 over her last two games.
- Alex Richard leads the BIG EAST and ranks 15th in the NCAA in field goal percentage (63.6).

Scouting DePaul                                                                                                   
The Blue Demons swept BIG EAST Weekly Honors on Monday. Senior guard Sonya Morris averaged 18.7 points for the Blue Demons in a 2-1 week. She scored a career-high 36 points in DePaul's win over Vanderbilt. 36 points is the most by a BIG EAST player this season. Teammate Aneesah Morrow won BIG EAST Freshman of the Week accolades for the third time. She averaged 20 points and 12.7 rebounds last week in games vs. Rutgers, Arizona, and Vanderbilt. The Blue Demons opened the Paradise Jam with a three point win over Rutgers, but would fall to Arizona. They ended their trip with a 91-74 win over Vandy to move their overall record to 5-2.

Butler defeated DePaul for the first time in program history last season. The win came in the 21st meeting. The all-time series between DePaul and Butler began in 1984-85.
 
Last Meeting vs. DePaul                                                                                     
Butler ended the 2020-21 regular season in style with an 86-81 victory over #25 DePaul at Wintrust Arena. The Bulldogs scored 30 points in the third quarter to take a lead and would match DePaul with 16 points in the fourth to earn the five-point win. All five BU starters scored in double figures and Emilia Sexton would come off the bench to hit three 3-pointers. Butler shot 54 percent from the field in the victory and made 45 percent of their 3-point attempts. They dished out 17 assists on 33 made field goals and won the points in the paint battle 42-34.
 
Scouting Marquette                                                                              
The Golden Eagles are 4-2 at the start of the 2021-22 season with wins over Alcorn State, NJIT, Southern and most recently Middle Tennessee. Their first loss came at Boulder to Colorado. They also took a setback to nationally-ranked Georgia in the final game of the Daytona Beach Invitational. Head Coach Megan Duffy has one of the only starting five units in the BIG EAST that features three forwards. The Golden Eagles are an experienced group with great size. They are led in the scoring column by forward Lauren Van Kleunen (13.2). Purdue transfer Karissa McLaughlin is second on the team with a 12.5 scoring average.

Marquette is in front of Butler in the all-time series 16-9. The first-ever meeting was a Bulldog win in 1985-86. Marquette has won the last three meetings. Butler's last win came at Hinkle in 2020. Their last win at Marquette came in 2019 when the Golden Eagles were ranked #11.

Butler lost 77-48 at Marquette last season. The Golden Eagles led by four after the first, but opened up the second quarter on a 12-2 scoring run to take control of the action. Marquette pulled down 21 offensive rebounds to help net 17 second chance points. 20 BU turnovers also resulted in 19 points for the home team.
 
BIG EAST Openers                                                                                                
The Bulldogs have only won one BIG EAST opener. That victory came against Villanova on Dec. 29, 2018. BU won that matchup 63-55.
 
Steals and Shooting                                                                              
Butler senior Emilia Sexton has a steal in three-straight games. She leads the team with nine steals this season. Sexton is also the top 3-point shooter on the roster with 12 triples in 36 attempts (33%).
 
Fantastic Freshmen                                                                               
Butler freshmen have scored 235 of the 351 Bulldog points this season (67.0%).
 
Season-High For Sydney                                                                                     
Sydney Jaynes scored a season-high 12 points at IUPUI on Sunday. Jaynes jumped into the starting lineup for the first time this season and came up with 10 of her 12 points in the first half. Jaynes now has 21 points over her last two games. She only had 11 points over her first four games played this season.
 
Games Played vs. Games Missed                                                                     
Butler only has five players on the roster that have appeared in all six games this season. (Emilia Sexton, Trinity White, Tenley Dowell, Zoe Jackson and Sydney Jaynes). Jamilyn Robinson, Oumou Toure, Rosemarie Dumont and Kate Tanner have not played at all.

Butler will play at Marquette on Sunday, Dec. 5. The team will then return to Hinkle Fieldhouse to host Denver on Dec. 10. The game at Hinkle Fieldhouse will begin at 6 PM.
