The Bulldogs opened the track and field season with a strong showing at the Blue and Gold Invitational, hosted by Notre Dame Friday in South Bend.
Butler won five events on the men's side, while Butler's women won three. Four of those performances were school records.
Tom Pitkin set a new Butler school record with a time of 47.26 in the 400 meters. That won the event.
Jacob Uhl took third in the 400 (48.08). Uhl also broke the previous Butler indoor record of 48.32, which Uhl set in 2019.
In the pole vault,
Paul Signorelli and
Luke Walden went 1-3 in their first collegiate competition. Signorelli tied Butler's school record when he cleared 4.85 meters to better Notre Dame's Nolan Blachowski (4.70 meters). Signorelli matched the mark of
Wade Walder from 2020. Walden got over the bar at 4.55 meters for third.
Butler's men ended the night by winning the 4x400 relay, also in a school-record time. The Bulldogs' time of 3:14.66 was better than BIG EAST foes DePaul (3:16.11) and Marquette (3:17.63).
Isaac Kane, Pitkin, Uhl and
Zac Stanley combined for the win. The previous mark was 3:16.54. Uhl, Pitkin and Kane were part of that quartet.
Earlier in the night, Butler took the top three spots in the men's 1,000 meters.
Matthew Wigelsworth led a trio of Bulldogs with a time of 2:27.67, followed by
Liam Dennis (2:29.58) and
Carter Schorr (2:29.77).
Kane and Pitkin took the top two spots in the 200 meters. Kane crossed the line in a time of 21.84, while Pitkin registered a time of 22.18.
Jack Elder's initial jump of 6.86 meters moved him into second in the long jump, just off the mark of Marquette's Joseph Keys (6.88 meters).
On the women's side,
Niki Ezeh posted a solid all-around performance. She won the 60-meter hurdles in a time of 8.53, bettering her own school record of 8.61. Ezeh came in ahead of Becca Coan (who was running unattached) and teammate
Nina Hilt. Her leap of 5.55 meters in the long jump was good for third. Notre Dame's Alaina Brady won the event at 5.79 meters. Ezeh also placed third in the shot put with a throw of 13.67 meters. Rachel Tanczos of the Fighting Irish won with a toss of 15.34 meters.
Rebecca Collester captured the 200 meters, as her time of 25.19 came in ahead of Bre Marchan's mark of 25.39.
Morgan Werner's 9:51.78 won the 3,000 meters, beating out Marquette's Kendall Pfrimmer (9:54.44).

Barry Keane travel to Boston to run in an elite 5,000 meter field at the Sharon Colyear-Danville Season Opener. The meet will stream on FloTack with the men's 5k scheduled for 6 p.m.
