In one of the most impressive races in Butler history, both
Barry Keane and
Simon Bedard topped the Bulldogs' school record in the indoor 5,000 meters Saturday night at the Sharon Colyear-Danville Season Opener in Boston.
Keane crossed the line in 13:25.96, which is the Ireland national record for an indoor 5,000 meters. He finished eighth overall among one of the nation's most elite fields. Keane's time set a new Butler record by nearly 15 seconds!
Bedard's time of 13:32.48 also bettered the Butler school record of 13:40.90 by Erik Peterson in 2017.
Olli Hoare of the On Athletics Club won the event in a time of 13:09.96. The top collegiate finisher was Wesley Kiptoo of Iowa State in a time of 13:14.74. Keane was the fifth-best collegiate performer.
The field included 10 collegiate men who earned All-America honors at the NCAA Cross Country Championships last month.Â
Bedard entered the event with a personal-best of 13:34.83 (outdoor) in the 5,000 meters, while Keane's best (also outdoors) was 13:35.00. Both times were run at the 2021 Oregon Relays.
