INDIANAPOLIS – The Purdue Fort Wayne Mastodons won the weekend series against Butler by posting a 9-6 victory at Bulldog Park on Sunday afternoon. BU got home runs from
James Gargano and
Freddie Matos in the getaway game, but a five-run fourth inning from the visitors proved to be the difference in the outcome.
Gargano led off the game for Butler with a bomb over the wall in left field to cut into the 2-0 deficit the 'Dawgs faced after the top half of the inning. PFW scored two in the first, one in the second and five in the fourth to build their lead. Butler got two runs back in the fourth off singles from
Kollyn All and
Matt McElwain. Matos hit his two-run home run in the seventh and
Aaron Steinhart would score
Nick Ortega in the eighth for the final run of the game.
The win went to Jacob Myer (2-0) while the loss was pinned on
Jon Vore (0-1). Myer threw 6.1 innings and struck out three. The Mastodons would use two other arms in relief before handing the ball off to Ryan Robison for the four-out save (3).
Joe Graziano,
Cory Bosecker,
Alex Voss and
John MacCauley all touched the rubber for BU. Voss had two great innings out of the pen. He struck out three and only allowed one hit.
Butler will get back to work next weekend with a three-game series at Evansville.
