EVANSVILLE – The Bulldogs posted a 12-8 win at Evansville on Saturday to tie the weekend series at one game each. BU scored five runs over the first three innings and held off a late charge from the Purple Aces to come up with their third win of the regular season.
How it Happened
Robbie McCargar played a huge role in the outcome with a home run and a triple that helped him record two RBI. Seven different Bulldogs drove in a run and eight scored at least one run.
Freddie Matos and
Nick Ortega each hit a double in the first inning to give BU a quick 2-0 lead. Bulldog bats stayed hot in the second as McCargar led off the inning with a homer to centerfield. Four batters later,
James Gargano would single through the left side to score
Zach Orn.
Ortega doubled again in the third to send
Aaron Steinhart into scoring position. The BU catcher made the game 5-0 on a groundout from Bennett.
Butler added single runs in the fifth and seventh to move the scoreboard to 7-3. The game was far from over however, as the two teams combined for 10 runs over the final two innings.
Butler looked to be in command by scoring five runs in the top of the eighth. Gargano doubled to send Margroff around to third and the speedy centerfielder would score off an at-bat from Matos. Steinhart would send a sac fly into left to score Gargano and a double down the right field line from Bennett would give BU an 11-3 advantage. Bennett would cap off the inning by scoring off a single from Poynter.
The Purple Aces would not go away in the late stages of the game they scored three runs off two hits in the eighth and added two more in the ninth. The comeback chance would come to a halt however once
Jack Pilcher touched the rubber. He got the final out of the contest which would secure the win for starter
Jack Myers.
Myers struck out eight batters over seven full innings and only walked one Purple Ace.
Derek Drees and
Jon Vore would provide relief out of the pen to help BU come out on top.
