@ButlerUBaseball Splits Saturday Doubleheader with Valparaiso

INDIANAPOLIS – Valparaiso won the first game 7-1, but the Bulldogs would win game two of the doubleheader 13-10 and therefore win the weekend series two games to one.

Colin Fields led Valparaiso to victory in game one. He threw seven full innings and limited BU to just two hits. Fields struck out 11 and only walked three. He was replaced on the mound by Nolan Lebamoff.

Butler found the scoreboard with Lebamoff on the rubber. Aaron Steinhart hit a solo home run in the top of the ninth to break up the shutout. James Gargano, Freddie Matos and Matt McElwain also found the hit column in game one.

Fields moved his record to 2-2 on the year while Jack Myers tasted defeat for the first time this season (2-1). Myers threw five innings and struck out five. BU would also use Nick Eaton, Nick Miketinac and Benji Downs in relief.

Game two was all about the offense with the two teams combining for 23 runs off 31 hits. Every BU starter recorded at least one hit in the victory. The win on the mound went to Alex Voss (1-0) while the loss went to Jacob Rosenkranz (0-2).

Butler scored four runs in the top of the first and seven in the top of the fifth to build their lead. BU played as the visiting team in each game Saturday even though the games were played at Bulldog Park.

Gargano, Matos, McElwain, McGrath and Poynter all came up with extra base hits in the win, but the play of the day belonged to Steinhart who recorded his third home run of the season. Steinhart had a team-best four RBI's in the win. Six other 'Dawgs were also credited with RBI's in the high scoring affair that ended just before the four-hour mark.

The 'Dawgs will now shift their focus to the Ball State Cardinals for a three-game series that gets underway in Muncie on Thursday.
