INDIANAPOLIS – Gordon Graceffo threw eight complete innings against Butler on Saturday afternoon to lead the Wildcats to an 8-1 victory over Butler. These two teams will meet at 12 PM on Sunday to decide who wins the weekend series.
Graceffo only allowed one Butler run off four hits over his eight frames of work. The right-hander struck out five and only issued one walk. With Graceffo taking the win (4-2),
Connor Schultz would be hit with the loss (2-4). Shultz allowed two runs in the first inning, but settled in nicely after to keep BU in it.
Run support came in the fifth for Butler as
Jonathan Shoop sent a sac fly to deep right field, scoring
Andy Bennett. The 2-1 deficit was blown wide open however in the seventh with Villanova scoring four runs.
Three doubles and a walk opened up the top of the seventh and would signal the end of the day for Schultz.
Greg Gilbert would get BU out of the seventh and
Benji Downs would come on for the eighth. Nova scored two more runs against Downs after a two-run shot from Rotondo. The final inning of work would go to
Nick Miketinac out of the bullpen.
Butler only had one hit over the first four innings, and would end this game with four total. After a stellar performance from Graceffo, Cameron Mathes would take care of the ninth for the visitors. He struck out two of the three batters he faced to give Nova their first win of the conference season.
Brody McGrath led BU with two of the team's four hits. Other 'Dawgs to get on base included
Andy Bennett and Shoop.
