St. John’s Sweeps Doubleheader at @ButlerUBaseball

INDIANAPOLIS – The Bulldogs moved to 10-21 on the season after taking two losses in a Saturday doubleheader to visiting St. John's. The Red Storm pitching was the difference in the first day of action. BU was limited to just three hits in each contest. They left 10 runners on base in the opener and 11 in game two.

BIG EAST doubleheaders feature one seven-inning game followed by a full nine-inning contest. In game one, Nick Mondak led the Red Storm to a 9-0 victory with six full innings on the mound. His fourth win of the season included 10 strikeouts and just one walk. The final inning went to relief pitcher Josh Lajoie. He struck out two of the three batters he faced.

Connor Schultz felt some discomfort on the mound after the third inning and would be replaced in the game by Cory Bosecker. Benji Downs would work the final two innings for BU. Schultz allowed three runs off seven hits before exiting the game. Bosecker was a bright spot in the first game with four strikeouts in just two innings.

Matt McElwain got the start in right field for BU and recorded two of the team's three hits. He and Duncan Hewitt each recorded a double in the setback.

Game two featured Jack Myers taking on Ian Murphy. Myers went seven full innings, but didn't get any run support leading to the 4-0 STJ victory. He struck out four and walked two. All three runs against him were earned. Greg Gilbert would get the final six outs for BU.

On the other side, the win went to relief pitcher Geoff Mosseau. Nick Guzzi, Joe Joe Rodriguez and Ethan Routzahn also made appearances for the Red Storm. Two of Butler's three hits went against the starter and the Johnny bullpen would take it from there to give the visitors a 4-0 win.

Aaron Steinhart delivered two of Butler's three hits to end the day 2-for-4 at the plate with a walk. Jonah Wichman also saw extended playing time at shortstop and would end the game 1-for-4.

Butler and St. John's will end the four-game series tomorrow with another doubleheader on the schedule. First pitch is set for 1 PM.
