Butler made a climb up the leaderboard Tuesday in the final round of the Ball State Cardinal Classic in Yorktown, Ind. The Bulldogs entered the final 18 in eighth place before finishing the event in fifth.
The Bulldogs shot 301 (+13) Tuesday, which bettered their Monday totals of 307 and 314 in the first two rounds. Butler finished at 922 (+58).
Akron won the event at 912 (+48), followed by Eastern Michigan (915; +51), Cleveland State (916; +52), IUPUI (917; +53), and then the Bulldogs. Butler jumped Purdue Fort Wayne in the final standings thanks to Tuesday's performance. The Mastodons entered the final round tied with Akron atop the leaderboard. Only Loyola, which climbed five spots into sixth-place behind a final-round team score of 300, had a better Tuesday performance than Butler's 301.
Strong final rounds placed Claire Edwards and Ally Ross in a tie for fourth at seven-over 223 for the 54 holes. Ross shot a one-over 73 Tuesday, which followed Monday rounds of three-under 69 and an 81 in the second round.
Edwards carded a two-over 74 Tuesday at the 6,204-yard The Players Club course after scores of 73 and 76 in the two rounds Monday. Edwards entered the final round in a tie for fourth and stayed right in that position.
Taylor's Nicole Jung and Bowling Green's Kayla Davis tied for medalist honors at 220 (+4). Jung's 71 was the best round of the day Tuesday.
Freshman Katie Steinman had 15 pars on her Tuesday card to post a score of three-over 75. That moved her into 47th place at 237 (+21).
Katelyn Le shot 79 Tuesday to finish at 240 (+24) and in a tie for 53rd. Alaina Bowie finished at 245 (+29) after a final-round 80, placing 68th.
Freshman Madalin Small made her Butler debut in the event, playing as an individual. She opened with a three-over 75 in Monday's first round before carding an 84 and then an 80 Tuesday. She tied for 50th at 239 (+23).
The Bulldogs return to action Oct. 4-5, hosting the Butler Fall Invitational at the team's home course, Highland Golf Club.
