WASHINGTON, D.C. – Butler held a one point lead at the half, but the Hoyas would outscore Butler 43-26 in the second half to earn the victory.
Celena Taborn was outstanding for Butler with 21 points and eight rebounds. The Hoyas got a lift from Mary Clougherty and her 24-point outing.
How It Happened
Georgetown outhustled Butler early to earn a 9-5 lead after the first six minutes of competition. The Hoyas only made four of their first 13 field goal attempts, but five offensive rebounds led to five second chance points.
The Bulldogs got onto the scoreboard with a triple from
Emilia Sexton and a bucket from
Alex Richard.
Kate Tanner added the first 3-pointer of her BU career in the first quarter and a pair of free throws from
Tenley Dowell to go along with a post score from
Celena Taborn would give Butler 12 points over the first 10 minutes.
Butler got within one point of Georgetown at the 6:45 mark of the second quarter causing the Hoyas to call a timeout. Taborn scored four of Butler's first six points in the second to erase an early deficit.
Tenley Dowell buried a 3-pointer from the wing on the next possession to give BU their first lead and her steal into a score minutes later broke a 26-26 tie.
Butler ended the second quarter with 24 points to take a 36-35 lead into the half. Taborn had 10 points and six rebounds to lead the way for the visitors. Sexton hit three 3-pointers for BU to net nine points and
Tenley Dowell was perfect from the field to add eight.
Georgetown opened the second half on a 7-0 scoring run forcing Butler to call a timeout. The scoring spree moved the scoreboard to 42-36. Scott scored the first two buckets for GU and Clougherty added her third 3-pointer of the day, pushing her scoring total to 17.
Later in the third, a 9-0 scoring run from Georgetown would double up Butler and give the Hoyas a 10 point lead. Taborn scored the first field goal of the third for BU and the last. Despite her efforts, Georgetown still took a 10 point advantage into the fourth.
Georgetown's 10-point lead didn't waver over the first five minutes of the final quarter. Taborn found Tanner for two just before the media timeout, but GU held onto a 67-56 lead with 4:47 to play in the game. The fourth quarter mirrored the third and Georgetown would move forward to find the win column 78-62.
