Two student-athletes on the Butler women's soccer team have received recognition from the BIG EAST for their performances the past week against St. John's and UConn. Sophomore Emma Martin was named BIG EAST Goalkeeper of the Week, and Freshman Talia Sommer was selected BIG EAST Freshman of the Week.
Earning her first start of the season, Martin made seven saves in a 2-0 shutout on the road against Connecticut. The sophomore goalkeeper faced seven shots on goal throughout the match and finished with a 1.000 save percentage. Martin led the league in save percentage, goals against average and shutouts last week.
Sommer had two assists in two matches last week. Her first one was a pass to Arianna Jalics in the 22nd minute against St. John's, which led to the Bulldogs' only goal of the match. Then, in Butler's 2-0 win at UConn, the midfielder gave Abigail Isger an opportunity to score in the 12th minute to give the Bulldogs a lead they would keep until the final whistle. Sommer was tied for first in the league last week in assists.
The Bulldogs return to action Thursday, traveling to Seton Hall.
