Butler's Barry Keane pulled away from Villanova's Haftu Strintzos over the final 500 meters, taking the BIG EAST title by six seconds Saturday afternoon.

The BIG EAST Cross Country Championships Presented by JEEP were held at Highland Park in Attleboro, Mass.

Keane covered the 8k course in a time of 23:15.

Butler's men, after capturing the team title at the last two BIG EAST Championships, finished fourth among a strong field. Butler's women placed fifth.

Matthew Forrester, Jesse Hamlin and Edouard Morin-Luzuy joined Keane in earning All-BIG EAST honors with Top 20 finishes on the men's side, while Mia Beckham finished eighth in the women's race to be named All-BIG EAST.

THE MEN'S RACE

Halfway through the 8k race, the men's lead pack included more than 20 runners. Included among that group were Bulldogs Keane, Hamlin and Forrester. Keane and Strintzos eventually pulled away from the group before Keane kicked into high gear over the closing stretch.

Villanova, led by Strintzos, had five of the top 10 finishers to take the team title.

Keane's win comes after he finished third at the 2021 championship and was the runner-up at the spring 2021 championship that was pushed back from the fall of 2020.

Coach Matt Roe on Keane: "Barry ran a tactically smart race. I'm pleased to see him get the win. He's been close the last two years and he left no doubt today."

Coach Roe on the Butler Men: "We didn't get into the race early as a team. Plain and simple. We made it difficult and victimized ourselves by racing from behind. It's unfortunate because we have had good preparation and the fitness was there to be successful. Today was a great opportunity to learn and adjust. I'm optimistic we can have our best race of the year in two weeks."
