For the second year in a row, Butler men went 1-2 at the NCAA Great Lakes Regional. In 2021, it was Barry Keane following teammate Simon Bedard to the finish line. This year, Keane moved to the front of the field with Jesse Hamlin placing second.

Friday's regional was contested at the LaVern Gibson Championship Cross Country Course in Terre Haute, Ind.

The top-two finishes guarantee Keane and Hamlin at least individual spots in the upcoming 2022 NCAA Cross Country Championships, while the Bulldogs will await word on a potential team berth as the field will be announced tomorrow.

As a team, the Butler men finished fourth. Mia Beckham led the Butler women to an eighth-place team finish.

THE BUTLER MEN (10K): Keane moved to the front of the lead pack at the midway point of 5k and then started to run away from the field. His one-second advantage at 5k turned into a 15-second edge by the 8k split. His regional win follows a BIG EAST title two weeks ago. Keane covered the 10k course in a time of 29:38.1.

Hamlin started to overtake members of the pack trailing Keane at the 8k split, passing a pair of Michigan runners to firmly take the second spot. He finished 13 seconds behind Keane.

1. Barry Keane, 29:38.1
2. Jesse Hamlin, 29:50.9
25. Jack McMahon, 30:33.7
26. Edouard Morin-Luzuy, 30:34.5
28. Will Minnette, 30:40.0
37. Matthew Forrester, 30:52.6
Evan Byrne, DNF

MEN'S TEAM RESULTS: Butler came in just three points behind third-place Michigan. The top three team spots went to teams ranked nationally in this week's poll as No. 8 Wisconsin took the regional title, followed by No. 13 Notre Dame and No. 28 Michigan.
  1. No. 8 Wisconsin – 50 points
  2. No. 13 Notre Dame - 61
  3. No. 28 Michigan - 79
  4. Butler - 82
  5. Michigan State - 137
  6. Indiana – 176

There were a total of 29 teams and 195 runners in the field. In 2021, the Bulldogs placed fifth and earned an at-large NCAA Championships berth.

COACH MATT ROE ON THE BUTLER MEN: "The men who scored for us ran outstanding today. Our response from conference was exactly what I hoped for. We were right there with a few of the top teams in the NCAA, and we raced like a Top 25 program. We will see if it's enough to get to Stillwater. To go 1-2 in the region two years in a row is a rare feat. I am pleased for both Jesse and Barry, and I am excited to see what they can do at Nationals."

THE BULLDOG WOMEN (6K): Beckham earned All-Region honors with a 17th-place finish, completing the 6k course in a time of 20:19.8. That followed up her All-BIG EAST performance from two weeks ago when she finished eighth at the conference championships.

Beckham is in the mix for an individual spot in the 2022 NCAA Cross Country Championships with her fate largely tied to how many teams from the Great Lakes Region make the field.

Olivia Markezich of Notre Dame won the race in a time of 19:54.0. She beat Ohio State's Addie Engel by just more than three seconds. Notre Dame had three of the top six finishers in taking the team title.

Mia had a courageous effort. We have had multiple All-Americans run at LaVern and her time on this course was one of the fastest in school history. Hopefully it will gain her a bid to NCAAs."

UP NEXT: There are nine regionals nationally, all of which are run Friday. The top two team finishers in each region in addition to 13 at-large teams will make up the 31-team NCAA Championship field. The NCAA Division I Men's & Women's Cross Country Selection Show will air Saturday (Nov. 12) at 5 p.m. ET on NCAA.com. A link to the show will be on the front page of NCAA.com.

Stillwater, Okla., and Oklahoma State University will host the 2022 NCAA Cross Country Championships Saturday, Nov. 19.
