BOCA RATON -- The Bulldogs improved to 4-2 on the year after posting a 78-51 win over Binghamton in their second game of the 2022 Florida Atlantic Thanksgiving Tournament. Butler shot 46 percent (27-59) from the floor and limited the Bearcats (4-2) to 36 percent shooting (22-61).
Rachel McLimore led Butler's offense with a game-high 15 points, and just behind her, Anna Mortag chipped in another 14. The teammates combined for four three-pointers, and the pair went a combined 5-5 from the charity stripe. Joining them in double figures was Caroline Strande, who reached 10 points in just 15 minutes of action.
Jessica Carrothers saw her first career start in a Butler uniform, and she helped the first five build a quick, 12-4, lead in the first three minutes of action. Binghamton charge back and pulled to within one, 12-11, with about three minutes to play. Behind nine points from Sydney Jaynes, the Bulldogs recovered and led, 22-16, after one full quarter.
In the second period, Butler led by as many as 18, making five three-pointers and getting eight points from the bench. At the halftime break, The Bulldogs led, 42-26.
Binghamton played its best basketball of the game in the third quarter, matching Butler's output of 15 points in that frame. The fourth period was a different story, as the Bulldogs outscored the Bearcats, 21-10.
Tenley Dowell was a perfect 3-for-3 for the day from beyond the arc, while McLimore, Mortag, Strande, and Jordan Meulemans each had a pair. As a team, the Bulldogs shot 57% from deep, sinking 13, in total.
Mortag (9) and Jaynes (8) combined to lead Butler with 17 rebounds, while Strande pulled down six of her own. The trio each secured three on the offensive end of the floor.
Butler will return to Hinkle Fieldhouse to open BIG EAST play on Friday, Dec. 2, hosting St. John's for a 7 PM tip.
