Butler opened the 2022-23 track and field season Friday night, traveling to South Bend for the Blue and Gold Invitational, hosted by Notre Dame at the Loftus Sports Center.

The Bulldogs started the season strong, posting several Top-3 finishes and setting a pair of school records.

Butler was joined in the field by host Notre Dame, Bethel (Ind.), DePaul, Detroit Mercy, Goshen, Grace, Indiana Tech, Marquette, Northern Illinois (women), and Valparaiso.

  • In his Butler debut, Luke Finnegan set a Butler record and a personal-best in the 60 meters with a time of 6.79 in the prelims Friday. Finnegan also placed second in the 400 meters, crossing the line in 48.50. Finnegan's 60-meter time broke Garrett Kern's 2020 school mark of 6.91.
  • Jack Elder's 8.23 in the 60-meter hurdles set a school-record for the Bulldogs, besting Wade Walder's time of 8.35 from 2019. Elder finished third in the event Friday night.
  • Drew Herman won the high jump with a leap of 2.0 meters (6' 6.75").
  • Joey Gareis took first in both the long jump and the triple jump Friday night. Gareis won the long jump with a mark of 7.01 meters (23'0"), and then claimed the triple jump, launching himself 13.99 meters (45' 10.75").
  • William Cuthbertson won the 1,000 meters in a time of 2:26.07.
  • Ben Bradley placed third in the 200 meters in 22.41.

On Saturday, three Bulldogs will travel to Boston for the Sharon Colyear-Danville Season Opener.

One year ago in Boston, Barry Keane set the Ireland national record for an indoor 5,000 meters, topping the Butler school record in the process as well.

Keane will once again toe the line in the top section of the elite 5,000 meters. Teammate Jesse Hamlin is part of the top section of the 3,000 meters. Angelina Ellis will make her 2022 debut in the 3,000 meters.

The Bulldogs close out the 2022 portion of the schedule Friday when the team travels to Chicago for the Blue Demon Holiday Invite.
