Seton Hall Tops @ButlerUWBB 79-45 on New Year’s Eve

SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. – Seton Hall collected their 11th win of the season on Saturday afternoon with a 79-45 victory over Butler at Walsh Gym. The Bulldogs will head into 2023 with a 6-8 overall record that includes a 1-4 mark against BIG EAST teams. With the win, Seton Hall improves to 11-4 (4-1).

How It Happened
Seton Hall opened the game on a 7-0 scoring run. Lauren Park-Lane hit a 3-pointer from the corner in front of the BU bench on the first Pirate possession and Sidney Cooks came up with the next four points.

Butler called a quick timeout after the 7-0 start (7:27) and got on the scoreboard after a backdoor cut from Rachel McLimore. The duo of McLimore and Tenley Dowell would allow BU to tie the game at 9-9 and a feed from Shay Frederick to Sydney Jaynes would give the Bulldogs their first lead of the afternoon.

3-pointers helped Butler take a four-point lead over Seton Hall after the first quarter. Caroline Strande hit from the far corner to give BU a 10-0 scoring run and Dowell and Frederick would add shots from distance to increase the scoring spree to 16-2.

The Bulldog lead would quickly fade over the opening stages of the second quarter. SHU went on an 11-0 scoring run to grab a 27-20 lead and that seven-point advantage would ride all the way to halftime (35-28).

Strande accounted for six of Butler's eight points in the second quarter. Sydney Jaynes also chipped in with a post move score against a double team. Park-Lane and Cooks combined for 18 of Seton Hall's 35 points in the first half. Cooks was perfect from the field (4-4) while Park-Lane struggled (2-9).

Butler got off to another slow start to open the second half. SHU scored 10-straight points to push their lead to 45-28 and force BU into a timeout. The Pirates held the Bulldogs without points for six minutes and would go on to outscore Butler 26-11 in the third to open up a 22-point advantage.

There was no chance of a comeback on Saturday as Seton Hall outscored Butler 18-6 in the fourth quarter. Strande and Jaynes each ended the game in double figures, but the 'Dawgs would take a 79-45 loss.
